May-02-2008 16:44TweetFollow @OregonNews Questionnaire for Security Clearances RevisedTim King Salem-News.comThe federal government implements a change that will bring relief to combat veterans who seek help.
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Until now, American servicemembers risked their military careers if they sought help in treating the psychological trauma brought about by combat, or even disclosed it. After repeated tours in the war theater, it seems unrealistic to expect that people would not suffer at least some degree of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, it just means they are human. A new rule implemented by the federal government relaxes that problem, at least when it comes to getting security clearances, and Uncle Sam definitely worked on behalf of our beleaguered combat veterans who need the support of each and every American citizen and institution. The DoD and the Office of Personnel Management and the Office of Management and Budget, have approved revisions to question 21 on the Questionnaire for National Security Positions, Standard Form (SF) 86, regarding mental and emotional health counseling. "Our people deserve the best mental health care we can provide without the fear of hurting their career in the long run," said Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen. "It's time we made everyone in uniform aware that the act of reaching out for help is one of the most courageous acts -- and one of the first steps -- to reclaiming your career and future. All leaders must set an example by seeking help themselves and encouraging others to do so. Getting this question changed is a terrific first step." This seems like sound management of people and policies, and it has taken years and many lives to get this far. Prior to the changes, combat vets who were honest in seeking help, would see the matter become part of their official service record and promotions and advancements were placed in jeopardy. Per direction of the secretary of defense, DoD components will immediately distribute the revised question 21 language for awareness and use by all DoD personnel completing the security clearance form. Until a new SF86 is published by the OPM later this summer, the OMB has agreed to allow DoD members to use the revised version of question 21 with the current SF86. Tim King to Jared: Wow Jared, I'm impressed that you believe you think it is your business to ask such a question, you know, the one I deleted. I guess I rubbed you wrong in that other story by stating that something might be different or missing from the old days of Salem culture, well what rock have you been living under?
I didn't rip on Salem, I didn't say anything very bad or condemning, but you take exception to the statement of a simple fact and now you try to be the little money rat that "exposes" something? Give me a break, I have had two departure dates for Iraq change and I am trying on more than one level to make this happen. I haven't done an update on Iraq for a few weeks because I don't want to put another date out that falls through. I am waiting on the Oregon Guard to get paperwork done, everyone is doing their best, basically the dollars and other donations for the trip have been used to purchase a number of essential pieces of equipment and as a result, I have a new duffel bag and a new framed backpack sitting at the door ready to go with all the essentials I needed.
People have been generous and helpful. I think though, that you intend your question as a dig, and again I am marveled at your self importance in thinking that you should properly ask that. If you know anything at all, it wouldn't show. I am the editor at Salem-News.com for your information, I have already spent two months with the Oregon Guard at war, and I will be going to Iraq as soon as we can make it happen. I am already set with the Oregon Guard to go again in August. So if you want to abuse the comment section to state stupid, rude or false things that imply something that has not a damned thing to do with the story, then I will just flush your innuendos and they will never see the light of day. If you are going to use this site then use it properly.
