(SALEM, Ore.) - When it comes to the disastrous fall of the U.S. economy, many of us are faced with something we never really saw coming. There are plenty of people who did, at least in the back of their minds, but either way it is too late and the American capitalist society has struck the iceberg. We hear people complain in the darkest and most degrading terms about President Obama's ambitious plans to save a broken country that he has been elected to lead. In turn, discussions about "redistribution" of wealth are engaging more people. There are after all, far more poor people than rich people. Maybe it is time for real Americans to take off the gloves and come out swinging against the oppressive, overbearing and unkind aspect of society that has led to this. Don't let anyone ever convince you that the destruction of the American economy isn't completely and absolutely the fault of Bush and the GOP. A balanced national budget soared farther into debt under their watch than at any other time in history. They took American pride and our integrity and tossed it under a fast moving train. Many of this persuasion, known as far-right, neocon and sometimes fascist, are prejudice. The saddest part is that most of them don't even know if they are because that is not an area in life where they are automatically vigilant, nor are their peers. Prejudice is a direct sign of a lack of intelligence. If you have to listen to a Limbaugh or O'Riley supporter, remember to just smile, nod and walk away as soon as possible. Resist other urges that well up inside of you as your mind races around the tragic state of your nation's people. Restrain your real desires toward the stuffy squares who still completely refuse to allow their party to accept responsibility for trashing the United States in ways that are almost indescribable. It is time to turn this country around and put it back on track as a decent and intelligent nation. Who is driving the resistance against Obama? The rich, that's who. Not all of them; many affluent people are more than willing to pay their share in taxes. The ones who constantly oppose the raising of the minimum wage, those who don't think that the rich should have to pay their share in taxes, those that don't believe all people have a right to healthcare or even education; these are the ones who need to pony up. The "conservatives" attending the recent CPAC event put down veterans, whined about the rich having to pay their fair share of taxes, and they actually state that the businesses, which are making money, are somehow kind and doing everyone a favor because they are willing to pay the people who work for them. What a joke. The American people, including those small businesses slugging it out with the corporations have built this country. Sweat equity; that's what made America, along with those who were willing along the way to fight for its ideals and survival. What does the GOP have against the military and veterans? Why are they so quick and willing to go to war, to kill innocent people by the hundreds of thousands? What does "support the troops" mean to those that do not support our veterans once returned to our own shores? Why do they insist that a few should remain at the top, holding almost all of the money while the real people of this country starve and scramble for things like basic healthcare? The cruelest joke of all is that the gentler, kinder people called "liberal" and "progressive" are more often than not, honest. They are family people; educators and nurses and construction workers. They are sometimes union members and don't think for a second that many GOP politicians wouldn't eliminate unions if they could so they could pay the American worker less. Big American corporate interest, represent by the Republican Party and big money interests, are all too willing to assault and insult and lie and belittle. Can anything be saved? Perhaps this is why the word "Socialist" is being heard so often these days. Maybe the reason is that the good Democrats are just too damned nice to ever be able to fix anything. Honest people can't make a point in the face of repeated lies, and that is the legacy of the Bush Administration. It's the part history will remember. Making matters worse, Democrats do side with the Republicans on the worst occasions and they are often just as corrupt, though it is generally a different type of corruption. Socialism sounds like and resembles in many ways, Communism. These words don't represent a system that deep pocketed Republicans find any comfort in, but it is a great opportunity to raise the flag of fear again, and see how it flies. Perhaps the people on the left side of the aisle have found something that has some teeth in it, something they believe in and will stay true to. The Republicans and their voiceboxes like Limbaugh seem intent on derailing the President's plans and I think you could call it the public sabotage of the country. They insist on comparing progressive ideas that help our poverty and low income poor to "Socialism" and maybe, if they keep it up, that is the way things will go. Possibly it is nothing more than a "trial ballon" by Obama regarding having service-connected veterans bill their insurance company (if they have one?!). Unfortunately we have to come to grips with the fact that he even thinks this way, it will be upsetting to huge numbers of veterans and their families. Even if the matter is dropped, it is out there, and people will be looking at Obama a lot differently. For example making companies debate responsibility with the government for service-related injuries is going to ultimately be treated like prior health issues and raise private insurance costs for all veterans, since it would decrease the insurer's ability to estimate them. If the injury occurred when the soldier was an agent of the government, it is the government's (i.e., our) duty to insure him. It's not like soldiers are overpaid for the risks.

DC et al: Too many make the same mistake you demonstrater, sir, re l the elements involved in the statement Tim made, which is surely relevant to his overall report. Economists wise enough to really understand our economy take into account also, in one way or another, via assumption or formula, factors such as the abslutely horrendous growing gap between rich upper class and lower/middle-class, the equally horrendous trade gaps existing with China and other very-low/wage nations, and other aspects, too. SO Tim'statement might be technically examinable but the overall sense he was imparting is absolutely correct --and unchallengable by those who will but look at realities as they exist today, and will change for the negative soon.

Tim, I believe that you are painting with too broad of a brush when you make the statement that "A balanced national budget soared farther into debt under their watch than at any other time in history." The amount of debt is only reverent when compared with our gross nation product, -our nation's worth-. It would not matter if I, myself, spent twice what I did the previous year if my economic strength had increased by perhaps winning a million in the lottery.

I'm service-connected and a friend just emailed this below CNN report. I have to wonder what the Obama Administration really thinks about us veterans? This is an unbelievable outrage.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki confirmed Tuesday that the Obama administration is considering a controversial plan to make veterans pay for treatment of service-related injuries with private insurance. Editor: Dennix, I sure wish this one was not at hand; I looked into it and sure enough, the president has apparently launched this although it has not been announced publicly. As those who read the story via the link above will learn, the matter has received serious opposition from veteran's groups. We will keep an eye on this.

Tim, I have to disagree with you the "prejudice is a lack of intelligence". Perhaps a better way to say what you meant is that it is a lack of being informed. We all have prejudices and by looking at them, acknowledging them and working to overcome them and their effects in our lives and the lives of others one of the best tools is more information. Of course prejudice causes some to close their minds and refuse information, now this is stupid.
Tim King: Gail, perhaps I have to stand corrected on that. I know culture has a great deal to do with it, thanks.
