Jews, God and the NSA

"As Jews, the concept of being watched is not new to us. We read in Ethics of our Fathers, "Know what is above you: an eye that sees, an ear that hears, and all your deeds are recorded..."

The friend was horrified that a Rabbi in Illinois had put out a message to his congregation and newsletter recipients, directly equating God's loving, all-seeing knowledge of everyone and everything, with the NSA's massive illegal surveillance of every person in the country. God's awesome love versus a fascist government awesome (previously secret) power.

"There was once a rabbi who hired a wagon driver to drive him to the next town. As the wagon passed a field of ripe produce, the wagon driver stopped the wagon, jumped out, and started picking some fruit.

"Within seconds the driver heard the rabbi shout, "Watch out! Someone's watching you!"

"Frightened, he quickly jumped back into the wagon and drove off. But as he looked over his shoulder to see who was watching him, the wagon driver didn't see a soul. "Hey rabbi," he said, "Who was coming? I don't see anyone."

"Edward Snowden became a household name this week as he joined the ranks of world-famous whistle blowers. With high-level security clearance Edward had access to some of the most important-and most secret-programs at the NSA, including the monitoring of U.S. citizens' phone calls and emails which he went public with after fleeing to Hong Kong.

"Without getting into the argument of whether the government should invade our privacy to protect us from terrorism, one thing is clear. Privacy does not exist. The government has access to all our emails, phone calls, text messages and Google searches. Everything we do on our computers is saved, studied and passed around-all without our consent.

"Why would Edward disrupt his life, leave his family and his girlfriend, and go into exile? He wanted to warn us that we are not as safe as we think, and that privacy is pretty much an illusion.

"Now, as long as we're not doing anything illegal, why should we care if the government is watching? We have nothing to hide!

"Well, for one, the government could easily misuse our information. And there may be some time in the future when the government needs to take a closer look at me. They may want to look through all my emails, my searches, my Facebook posts. They may need to track my locations, my family and friends and every aspect of my private life.

"We know that we are constantly under surveillance and accountable for every action. There's no hiding and no pretending. "In fact, in this week's Torah portion the Jews are about to battle Og, king of Bashan, and G-d tells Moses, "Do not fear him." Why did Moses need the reassurance?

"Hundreds of years earlier, Og had done a favor for Abraham. Since we know that G-d records every single deed-good and bad-Moses was afraid that Og's good deed would now come to his aid, and he would triumph. So G-d reassured him that he would indeed be able to kill Og during this war.

"If we keep in mind that all our words, deeds, and thoughts, are being recorded by Heavenly surveillance perhaps this will give us the inspiration to fill the world with good deeds!

The Rabbi talks about filling the world with good deeds, but what would be a good deed in God's eyes - resisting evil by refusing to go along with unjust laws, protesting publicly, informing others of government crimes, etc. - are things that the government now treats as crimes.

Denial of the import of the NSA documents (and of the DoD ones) by the Jewish community brings Rudolf Vrba to mind, one of two men who escaped a Auschwitz concentration camp and brought word to leading Jewish organizations of Nazi plans to ship thousands of Hungarian Jews to death camps. They were ignored.

"It is my contention that a small group of informed people, by their silence, deprived others of the possibility or privelage [sic] of making their own decisions in the face of mortal danger"

"Some historians have argued that a giving the Hungarian Jews this warning would have made no differance - because they claimed the Jews of Hungary were not prepared to revolt and that any rebellion against the Nazi's would have been suicidal. Vrba, though, sees it differantly [sic]:

"Passive and active resistance by a million people would create panic and havoc in Hungary. Panic in Hungary would have been better than panic which came to the victims in front of burning pits in Birkenau. Eichmann knew it; that is why he smoked cigars with the Kasztners', "negotiated", exempted the "real great rabbis", and meanwhile without panic among the deportees, planned to "resettle" hundreds of thousands in orderly fashion...

.... "Joel Brand, a leading Hungarian Zionist, was taken to SS headquarters in Budapest. As Brand recalled two months later, Eichmann 'snapped' at him, as soon as lie [sic] was seated:

The Chabad Rabbi seems blind to history. Comparing illegal and fascistic NSA surveillance to God's loving knowledge of everyone, he's made the most grotesque joke of all religious belief in the protective goodness of the all-knowing creator. And that comparison - that monstrous desecration of God - appears to have been purchased by a grant.

The totalitarian forces in the US government have apparently invested, as they moved forward with their internment camps and total surveillance, in making sure that the American Jewish community would be silent as the literal structure of the Holocaust was being revived here in the US. The Jewish community has made a mockery of their own cry, "Never again!" which they have tossed out the window .... in exchange for money.

This actually repeats what happened with Vrba and Wetzler, in which Jewish organizations, rather than exposing what was planned, made deals with the Nazis.

And the Jewish community seems also not to made the link between the danger of NSA surveillance and the work of Edward Black, IBM and the Holocaust. Black, himself Jewish, details the crucial role of IBM - the major data collection company of the day.

Those meaning this country harm have prepared carefully, aware that the Jewish community in the US could present a formidable obstacle to their desire to set up a totalitarian government on the model of Nazi Germany (data collection, concentration camps, removal of basic rights). To achieve distraction and even compliance with their increasingly totalitarian plans, they invested almost all of their "Homeland" (in Germany, it was called "Motherland) funds in neutering what would normally be the progressive group in the country, and the one most wary of fascism.

That a Jewish organization would go so far as to compare God's all seeing love to NSA's all controlling surveillance, could not speak more dramatically of just how thoroughly they have succeeded. They have achieved more than the silence and submission of the Jewish community to absolute government power, but even the most precious religious values have been surrendered to the government, using God as PR for a massive government crime against every person in the country.

Does the Jewish community honestly believe that the very same fascism, brought to the US by the Bushes, will spare them this time when it didn't before? Are they not aware that trains have long been prepared.

It is very late for the Jewish community to wake up. But wake up they must, and recognize the difference between God and the NSA, and the lack of difference between DHS and the SS.
