Jun-15-2009 17:29TweetFollow @OregonNews Brad Avakian Discusses Oregon’s May Unemployment NumbersSalem-News.comLabor Commissioner comments on unemployment rate; notes encouraging bright spots.
(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Today, State Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian released a statement on Oregon’s latest unemployment numbers. According to the state Employment Department, May saw a 12.4% unemployment rate in Oregon, which is the highest it has been in nearly 30 years. In response, Commissioner Avakian says he recognizes the tough times ahead, but also sees encouraging signs going forward and believes the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) is prepared to meet the challenges of a down-but-recovering economy: “Today’s new unemployment figures show that, despite strong action from our leaders in Salem and Washington D.C., it will take time to come through this economic downturn. Here at BOLI, we are seeing these hard times first-hand, as people are relying on our services even more. Claims to our Wage and Hour Division are up, as are calls and e-mails to our Technical Assistance for Employers program. Unfortunately, the state budget crunch also necessitates reductions to BOLI staff and services, challenging us to meet an increasing demand with fewer resources.” He continued, “But just as every cloud has a silver lining, this sobering news is not without encouraging bright spots. For example, in today’s report, the Employment Department found that the construction industry bucked previous trends and added nearly 2,000 jobs. Every major construction industry saw some measure of growth. As I have said before, if we continue to make smart investments in job creation, education, and quality workforce development and apprenticeship programs, we can put Oregonians back to work and ensure that workers are prepared with the skills to obtain the high-wage, high demand jobs of the future.” Avakian concluded by saying, “Likewise, while BOLI is experiencing tough times, we knew the shortfall was coming, and have been responsibly preparing for it. BOLI will continue to enforce civil rights laws, provide technical assistance for employers, and fight to protect employment rights and advance employment opportunities. It will take superhuman efforts from everyone – but we'll do it because Oregonians need us to do it.” Articles for June 14, 2009 | Articles for June 15, 2009 | Articles for June 16, 2009 | Quick Links

It's those people who take those ridiculous million dollar quarterly bonuses. Where does that money go? People who own 7 3.5 million dollar homes, yet can only stay in one at a time. Money can't flow if it's in the hands of few people who greedily keep it for themselves. Besides, I believe people who actually do work that support society should be paid better. Cops, nurses, teachers, construction workers, etc. And those who have many years of education to justify their high pay. Doctors comes to mind. Lawyers have many years of school but always seem to charge way too much for absurd things. Like a phone call which cost $200. Really? Even being paid $40 an hour that would be 5 hours on the phone. Probably took 5 minutes max. $2,400/hr. Not bad. Beside the point I suppose. There are a lot of things which need to be balanced out, set straight, and changed in this country.

I have been explaining to my children, extended family, and those I come into contact daily why our unemployment rate is as high as it is. Of course I do not go into deep detail explaining the micro/macro hypotheses and theories that economists put out there, I just distill it down to common sense observations developed over many many years: Republicans believe every day is 4th of July, but Democrats believe every day is April 15. We don't have a trillion-dollar debt because we haven't taxed enough; we have a trillion-dollar debt because we spend too much. Welfare's purpose should be to eliminate, as far as possible, the need for its own existence. Since the 1960's the poverty rate has increased, so money is not the answer, maybe it's personal responsibility for many, not all of course, because some people will always need our help. [G]overnment's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it. Government is the people's business and every man, woman and child becomes a shareholder with the first penny of tax paid.
Editor: Wow Rich anti-Democrat, anti-Obama and anti-poor. You sound awfully stereotypically like one of those hopeless neocons who bashes people like me yet never put a uniform on in their life The big guys are going to get the taxation they have avoided and deserve. Your lack of regulation brings us things like Wal Mart, a dirty planet and the simple ability to screw people over and get away with it. I think those days are behind us. And for the record, the poor of America take up less than one percent of the drain on this nation. Their piece of the pie is small and anything but problematic. You have a heart, I suggest letting it do your thinking.

when I was a kid..long, long ago, I was told columbus discovered america in 1492.. I was told to get under my wooden desk in case of a nuclear attack..I was shown a movie of a guy taking a hit off a marijuana cigarette, then putting a drill to his head. I was never taught about the federal reserve act of 1913 tho..I was never taught why marijuana was illegal, I was never taught how power and greed ends in lies and misery.. I was never taught the words of Jefferson and many others who said the bansksters were worse than standing armies. Why was I not taught the most important things in life when I was a kid? Why did they lie to me? Are they still? How did three building collapse in their own footprint at freefall speed? Why did israel bomb the USS Liberty with their U.S> flag standing tall? Why is the new administration continuring the wars without end? please, just tell me why?
