(SCIO, Ore. ) - Emergency responders, Linn County Sheriff's Office and Oregon State Police are at the scene of an injury commercial truck rollover crash along Highway 226 near Scio involving a trailer transporting more than 300 sheep. Some of the sheep were reported injured and killed, and others removed from the trailer. Preliminary information indicates on at approximately 10:45 a.m., a truck pulling a livestock trailer loaded with sheep rolled onto its side along Highway 226 near milepost 4. The driver was transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries to Samaritan Albany General Hospital. Firefighters, police and citizens worked together to help remove sheep from the overturned trailer. Veterinarians and other personnel from Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine were enroute to assist with handling the remaining injured sheep. The sheep's owner is also on scene assisting. The highway is not closed but travelers should be aware of the presence of emergency responders at the scene. UPDATE: Approximately 200 sheep died in this incident. Most were killed in the crash and some were euthanized at the direction of the sheep's owner who came to the scene. The owner's and driver's names are not available at this time. Workers on still there for vehicle removal and to clear the scene. The driver may have had a medical problem causing the vehicle to go off the roadway and overturn. Source: Oregon State Police
