Oregon Immigrant Rights Coalition Applauds Injunction Against SB1070

Key parts prevented from going into affect on Thursday.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Today, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton issued a preliminary injunction preventing several sections of Arizona's racial profiling law from going into affect on Thursday.

SB1070, signed into law in April, is the most extreme legislation anywhere in the country to deal with the nation's broken immigration system. Opposition to the law includes law enforcement, a diverse coalition of faith leaders, immigrants' advocates, civil rights leaders, and legal scholars.

"CAUSA applauds Judge Bolton in her decision to issue an injunction against key parts of this discriminatory law ", said Francisco Lopez, Executive Director of CAUSA. "Although this is just the first step in the process of stopping SB1070, this sends a strong message to states wishing to follow Arizona in passing laws targeting immigrants."

Last week, a coalition of civil rights organizations argued in federal court that Arizona's SB1070 should be blocked while their lawsuit against the unconstitutional measure is being litigated. The lawsuit charges that the Arizona Law interferes with federal law, invites racial profiling, and violates various constitutional guarantees including the First Amendment, equal protection, and the right to travel. The U.S. Department of Justice's case against the Arizona law was also heard.

Due to today's decision by the court, the key parts that will not go into affect on Thursday include:

The portion of the law that requires an officer make a reasonable attempt to determine the immigration status of a person stopped, detained or arrested if there's reasonable suspicion they're in the country illegally.

The portion that creates a crime of failure to apply for or carry "alien-registration papers."

The portion that makes it a crime for illegal immigrants to solicit, apply for or perform work. (This does not include the section on day laborers.)

The portion that allows for a warrantless arrest of a person where there is probable cause to believe they have committed a public offense that makes them removable from the United States.

So while law enforcement in Arizona is left to interpret the remaining components to SB1070 and the courts sort out the legal issues, the country waits for the federal government to fulfill their responsibility and reform our nation's broken immigration system.

"We are grateful for this temporary victory to the injustice that SB1070 represents", says Lopez. "We need the federal government to take action immediately and fix our nation's immigration system by passing comprehensive immigration reform".

From coast to coast, immigration reform advocates will join with the faith and immigrant communities on July 29th for a Day of Solidarity against SB1070. In Portland, CAUSA will join with members of the faith, immigrant and ethnic communities for a rally in solidarity with our Latino Brothers and Sisters in Arizona and call on the President and Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

It's not a new world .The people who killed for mohammed are same people who did the last 220 years. They have never in braced the advancement of the world and never will. They like beating women killing them for being women. The men don't work that much, they like the servents ie. women slaves, childern. You should only judge on how they treat their own.

Bill: Are the people who killed for Jesus the same also?  How about the Jews, what is their role in this?  It is the Jewish Zionist Israel that fails to conduct itself as a moral or legal nation/  Also, the Jewish faith isn't exactly the most respectful philosophy toward women is it?  The Muslim people I know and the ones you apparently know are very different.

Editor: Well this is a new world Bill, things are not as they used to be.  We deal with really harsh, vulgar profane comments and people misrepresent themselves, sometimes using multiple names to make a single point.  You don't have to like it, but I am as real of a person as you are going to find, just be glad this isn't automated, it keeps it far more interesting.

Look it up, I had a friend in boot camp that left his I-D back at the barracks and he was jailed for two weeks until the military confirmed his identity. And yes you MUST have Mexican Insurance to drive as an American in Mexico, if you don't and get in a wreck you are sent to jail. Look it up. I just don't want another cop, illegal who is used by coytoes, dying for no good reason other than drugs and money. Congress needs to work together and get this straight.

I am 100% okay with immigrants from any country but only if you go through the proper channels. All that we want is for people to be 'legal'. If you dont break the law than you have nothng to fear. If you have a warrant and get pulled over you will be taken in, if you are here illegal is should be the same way. After the bill was passed in AZ people got so mad about it when really it is only the illegals that are just not willing to go through the paper work because then they would actually have to pay taxes...

Did you know that if you are stopped in Mexico and don't have your papers on you or proof of Mexican Insurance coverage you are thrown in jail until you can state that you are an American citizen. Thanks Congress for nothing other than fear.

This partial injunction could really backfire on Obama and the democratic party. Considering that the vast majority of not just Arizona was behind this law, so were the majority of Americans. The judge in this case was a Clinton appointee, so expect considerable anger directed against those in power who have failed to enforce our immigration laws currently, not in the past. What it boils down to during elections is getting out the vote, and who will be the most motivated to vote. It will take a while for this to wind it's way through the courts, but November's election will be the act that will get those in congress moving. Don't forget the votes that took place last year in Virginia, New Jersey and Massachussetts. This upcoming vote will be a sweep for those who want to rein in spending and secure our borders. Change you can really believe in and get behind is coming.

Editor: You have showed up with and without a name today, figure out who you are and stick with it, I will check your IP and I think you're the same jerk that always rants BS around here, take a hint.
