Life and God`s Will

The states of Colorado, Georgia, Montana and Oregon are asking voters to interpret God’s will in November based on the misguided and emotional givens of Evangelicals who pretend, but who cannot possibly know, God’s will.

(PASO ROBLES, Calif.) - Those who insist that life begins at conception argue that what God has wrought should not be destroyed, as if it is His will that all embryos created naturally or in-vitro should exist, and the potential of every embryo be realized. But logic suggests that what is presumed to be the will of God may not be an accurate representation.

The Christian Right takes literally the admonition that "Thou Shalt not Kill" and President Bush, a born again Christian, vetoed a bill that would legitimize funding of stem cell research because, as he put it, “even if I err, I prefer to err on the side of life.”

He seems not to see the contradiction between what he says and what he does. Bush "sacrifices" US troops in Iraq where he places them in harms way knowing full well the cost in human life. For a man who "prefers to err on the side of life," his hypocrisy reveals his lack of caring for those whose wounds often are worse than death itself. He Rev. Malthus, originator of the Malthusian Theory of world overpopulation, claims population is growing at a pace beyond which it can be supported.

Periodically, cataclysms occur that might be called Acts of God that eliminate large bodies of world populations out of necessity. Flood, fire, earthquake, hurricanes, tornadoes; volcanoes, tsunamis, every sort of natural disaster and disease [not to mention war] strike without obvious consideration of why or where, or who may suddenly be eliminated as a result.

The egg and the sperm, thousands of which race for union prior to conception, contribute potential for life, but if the egg is not fertilized, it is expelled, and all but the one-successful sperm discarded. Obviously, it is not God's intention that every egg should be fertilized, or the potential of every sperm realized. And although the union of egg and sperm contribute potential, there is no guarantee the potential will be realized.

Physical disasters, miscarriage or premature deliveries with their attendant problems, as well as children born with genetic deformities or other inherited problems, are strong indicators that God's will is less than definite or perfect. God may provide the impulse, but man's free will continues to be the deciding factor when it comes to life [or death], often without regard for scientific evidence or the eventual outcome.

The definition of God's love as we understand love is not accurate anymore than is our definition of His will. Quite the contrary is obvious to anyone familiar with the outcome of war or the consequence of disaster, disease, or the natural course of events as prescribed by God. It is the tendency to particularize His Love that makes it anything but, and it is by the act of reason that man must find a solution to this apparent anomaly.
