(EUGENE, Ore. ) - A member of one of several unheralded but critically important departments in UO athletics recently received a national award for her contributions with the Ducks. Heather Halseth, an athletic trainer on the UO medical staff since 2005, was named National Collegiate Assistant Athletic Trainer of the Year two weeks ago at a national convention in Indianapolis. She is the first athletic trainer from Oregon to earn the honor from the National Athletic Trainers Association. Halseth, who works primarily with Oregon’s soccer and acrobatics and tumbling programs, also coordinates the department’s CPR/AED training, and is the annual meetings coordinator for the Northwest Athletic Trainers Association (NWATA). “Heather does so much for others that she’s very deserving of the recognition,” said UO associate head athletic trainer Kim Terrell, who nominated Halseth for the national honor. Terrell noted that Halseth coordinates Oregon’s CPR/AED training in tribute to her father, who died suddenly of cardiac arrest, and is so committed to her NWATA responsibilities that she went into labor while organizing a meeting. Halseth has a son with her husband, Travis, an athletic trainer with the UO football and lacrosse programs. Heather Halseth, a native of Dunsmuir, Calif., received her bachelor’s degree from Chico State in 2000. She completed a thesis on “Eating Disorder Protocol for Intercollegiate Athletics” while a graduate assistant at Boise State, from which she received her master’s degree in 2003.
