(NEWPORT) - A New Jersey man has learned the hard way not to drink and drive in Oregon.

On Tuesday just before 11:00 PM a Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Deputy observed a silver Honda Accord, bearing New Jersey license plate, traveling south on U.S. Hwy 101 near SW Alder St. in Newport without headlights on.

Deputy Lance Cummings attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle.

The vehicle failed to yield and turned onto SW Bay St where it nearly struck a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The vehicle crashed over a steep embankment at the intersection of SW Bay St and SW 8th St.

Deputy Cummings made contact with the driver, identified as 27-year-old Robert L. Rhoads, from Burlington, New Jersey.

Rhoads showed signs of impairment and a DUII investigation was conducted.

Deputy Cummings arrested Mr. Rhoads for DUII and transported him to the Lincoln County Jail where he refused to provide a breath sample.

Rhoads was charged with DUII, Reckless Driving, and Reckless Endangering.

Rhoads' bail was set at $22,500.

Rhoads also received traffic citations for Driving with No Head Lights, Fail to Stop for a Pedestrian in a Crosswalk, and Refusing a Breath Test.

Police also impounded Rhoads vehicle.

Wouldn't the "hard way" to learn about DUII be killing himself or someone else?
