(CLEVELAND) - The type of abuse inflicted on our youth is a travesty beyond words. It isn't different from the type of behavior seen all over the world, the problem is that Americans are raised to know better, or are supposed to be. The Boston Globe explains how Phoebe Prince was relentlessly bullied by girls early last year who called her "a slut," or "an Irish slut." The day of her death say this young girl walking home from school, when bullies drove by in a car, hurling insults and an energy drink in her direction. Prince kept walking to her house, straight to her closet, and hanged herself. What lurks in the hearts of people and why are parents not monitoring their kids behavior better than this? Is it the old adage that "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree?" I sure hope it isn't that simple. Perhaps it is, but the last time I checked ignorance is no excuse for the law. Parents need to talk to their kids about human rights, sex abuse and emotional and physical abuse, which of course can be one thing depending on the circumstances. Please pay attention to your child's life, and remind them of the consequences that exist for their behavior. Remind them of the kids rotting away in youth facilities or even being charged as adults in major crimes. _________________________________________________________________
Bullying! Phoebe Prince & Others (In Memorial) R.I.P. LaVena Lynn Johnson, Jamie Leigh Jones, what’s been happening since? The first three mentioned had different circumstances in their own right, Exactly what must these administrators, teachers and their parents do? Arriving from Ireland it started last September, the girl never had a chance, Back to those in charge who were aware of the in person and online abuse, Not a remote island off the radar neither a far away galaxy did it take place, It was so devastating that her brokenhearted parents just had to move away, Bullying isn’t always physical as more often than not it is from your mouth, Probably the saddest coupled with the strangest thing isn’t feeling all alone, Once I picked on a kid,7th grade, straight from school to home he would run, Isn’t this problem just restricted to lower income neighborhoods hey not so fast, Earlier this month Massachusetts Legislature passed anti-bullying legislation, Bullying! It should be put into all state and federal criminal codes, And if nothing is done soon, there might be another Columbine, Bullying was in the old world as ipods are in the new, Mother had no other choice for the safety of her kid, But what about the families where work is only found, Choosing instead to tutor in the evenings after work? The AMA Journal reports 3.2 million kids every year, Martha Revees, "Nowhere To Run Nowhere To Hide," This means incidents have grown beyond the actual act, _________________________________
Luke Easter is a poet who writes about things that are very close to the heart of Salem-News.com. Another former U.S. Marine, Luke heals the world with an approach that reaches people on a different level, one known for centuries, yet too often forgotten in the one we live in. We live in a world of social & economic injustice. The main reason for founding America in the first place was to relieve the oppression of the King of England. Patrick Henry said it best, “give me liberty or give me death.” And yet, all too often death seems to be the only way out. Why is there such a high suicide rate especially among teens, in the land of the free & the home of the brave? What makes headlines? Good news? Ha! More depressing stories than anything else. I feel poetry takes an edge off the hurt of bad news while still delivering it but in a, “glitzy” sort of way. Giving a different perspective. Kind of like slap in the face as opposed to a knife in the back. At least with the slap you’ll live to see another day and you will know whom it’s from. I wasn’t here for the beginning of the world but at 59, I just might be here for the end. Even though it’s still a knife, rhyme poetry helps to dull the blade. And that’s my job. Hopefully the bastards that killed her will sit in a jail cell for a long time.
