Senate Committee Passes National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2009

Federal and state governments spend more than $50 billion each year on corrections.

(ARLINGTON) - The bi-partisan National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2009 (S. 714) was passed out of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary today by voice vote.

The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) would create a commission to conduct a thorough evaluation of the nation's justice system and offer recommendations for reform at every stage of the criminal justice system.

Advocates say the establishment of such a commission could not come at a more critical time.

With 2.3 million people in prisons and jails, the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world.

Federal and state governments spend more than $50 billion each year on corrections, and the population behind bars continues to grow.

Webb says a new approach to crime prevention is necessary and the time for reform is upon us.

The commission created by this legislation would establish an organized and proactive approach to studying and advancing programs and policies that promote public safety, while overhauling those practices that are found to be fundamentally flawed.

Dear Sen. Jim Webb, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, My great grand mother used to grow Marijuana in her back yard of PA to help control her epilepsy. I also suffer but am unable to take many of the current medications due to their side effects. If you get this Bill passed I will put a picture of you on my wall right beside the portrait I have of Abraham Lincoln, after reading this I literally wept. This will end needless suffering of millions of Americans, it will help create Jobs through Industry on all fronts. It will end years of pointless bloodshed on our streets. It will allow hard working citizens to go through with life knowing they are no longer criminals.(I make it a point on a day to day basis to do what I can to help my community/ I am no criminal) God Bless you Senator Webb. please help put an end to the prohibition of Marijuana once and for all.

The time to Legalize marijuana is WAY overdue. My only hope is that our current president is not as ignorant as Nixon was when they make there recommendation on Marijuana.

Its time to legalize and regulate drugs. Cripple the cartels. And treat drug abuse as a disease it is. Those people need help not bars. Plus it is the peoples constitutional right to put what ever they want in there body. and no mumbo jumbo about deaths if you cared so much alcohol and tobacco would be illegal so that non-sense just shows how corrupt the system is being controlled by tobacco and alcohol companies under the table.
