(SACRAMENTO, CA) - A 31-year old police officer was shot to death today in Galt, California, while responding to a burglary today at approximately 11:30 a.m. Galt police Lt. Jim Uptegrove says Officer Kevin Tonn was fatally shot during what he described as a physical altercation with the suspect, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Officer Tonn was transported to the hospital where he died from the gunshot wound. The name of the suspect, who turned the gun on himself and committed suicide, has not been released. The City of Galt is Located approximately 20 miles south of Sacramento along Highway 99 adjacent to the Northern California Delta Recreation Area. Attorney General Kamala D. Harris expressed her condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Kevin Tonn of the Galt Police Department, who died in the line of duty today:
According to Officer Down Memorial Page: Police Officer Kevin Tonn was shot and killed after responding to a burglary call in the 200 block of F Street at approximately 11:20 am. A struggle ensued after Officer Tonn contacted a suspect two blocks away, in a field near a set of railroad tracks. The suspect was able to shoot Officer Tonn and then fired at another responding officer, who returned fire. The subject fatally shot himself before he was able to be taken into custody. Officer Tonn was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officer Tonn had served with the Galt Police Department for four years and had previously served as a firefighter and medic.
