(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - A network of land-, air-, sea- and spaced-based sensors confirms that the U.S. military intercepted a non-functioning National Reconnaissance Office satellite which was in its final orbits before entering the earth's atmosphere. At approximately 10:26 PM EST today, a U.S. Navy AEGIS warship, the USS Lake Erie (CG-70), fired a single modified tactical Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) hitting the satellite approximately 247 kilometers (133 nautical miles) over the Pacific Ocean as it traveled in space at more than 17,000 mph. USS Decatur (DDG-73) and USS Russell (DDG-59) were also part of the task force. The objective was to rupture the fuel tank to dissipate the approximately 1,000 pounds (453 kg) of hydrazine, a hazardous fuel which could pose a danger to people on earth, before it entered into earth's atmosphere. Confirmation that the fuel tank has been fragmented should be available within 24 hours. Due to the relatively low altitude of the satellite at the time of the engagement, debris will begin to re-enter the earth's atmosphere immediately. Nearly all of the debris will burn up on reentry within 24-48 hours and the remaining debris should re-enter within 40 days. I just do not see what the hub-bub is about shooting down a potentially lethal danger. I imagine more of these shootdowns will happen. I'm glad they can do it.

To all Very pertinent further-word found in Harper's Magazine reference above. It is: "BELTWAY BACCHANAL: Congress lives high on contributor's dime"; Ken Silverman, Harper D.C. Editor. "See with own eyes" for more rational, reasonable motivation to clean out, clear up entire stinking mess in D.C. Impeachment action sure to win their attention AGAIN, and emphasize nation now so fed up with misfeasance, incompetence and corruption that it is and will continue to be "death" to allow it to continue...death by re-election/vote, that is. If still-further defining action demanded, that too can follow, as with treason charge where applicable. But surely impeachment of current cabal, with all the ensuing struggle to do so as test of where we now stand (or fall !!) in this current demise of our once proud democracy is first step --win or lose !!

Helen et al: Yours here proves up very well mine to you, with Op Ed. Thanks for frank, open, honest sharing from your own life experience. For 90% of yours, I am in total agreement; differences stem only from what we must do now to preserve, protect and extend what your husband and many, many others fought so long and so well to make secure for us. It is their efforts we must save, protect, preserve and extend; Untied Nations needs badly much of same reform as does our Congress and Judicial and Legislative components. When all three of legs to our platform for democracy are rotting away, it makes sense to remove the one from which that rot spread so rapidly. Then we can also remedy the other two, working from clear, clean,Constitutionally conforming new-start. How or IF election process can help is yet to be seen, since that is surely just as distorted/perverted as the rest of what was once, for sure: "...OF the people, FOR the people, BY the PEOPLE !" Ironically, HARPERS article cited is followed in same issue with a deeply detailed report on similar dollar driven depreciation within our own Congress;both institutions need precisely the kind of clean-out you suggest. But what else do we have to work with, except continued efforts to make them BOTH work for us, rather than their current masters ?? Thank you for forcing still further cogitation here, even if rapid, off-top-of-head, still good faith and with best wishes to you for motivation.

Glen, Sue and Monty as a military wife (and retired teacher) I spent over 30 years around people in the military who dedicated their lives to keep all Americans safe. I have always been aware of the so-called intellectual elite (and their minions) who have not fought our wars and died for our country. They have sat on their collective rear-ends safely away from active war zones, criticizing those who defend America. This recent launch, as Monty addressed was a fantastic achievement and I believe will save many lives down the road. I have been around long enough to realize that when our enemies know we can easily destroy them or neutralize their weaponry they go run and hide. As you know many are living in caves and someday those caves will be their final resting place. The bridges ( and other infrastructure) we need to update and build can easily be blown up by our enemies, and they love you people who want us to quit improving our technology as they surely will always continue to improve theirs as hundreds of years of history clearly shows. Henry I really do understand what you are saying and I hope more people take the time to read and analyze just what you have to say and then they will understand why I disagree with most of what you post. As far as the United Nations, well have you ever talked to many active and retired military to get their input? Especially those who have put on those blue helmets? The United Nations, something that Woodrow Wilson (League of Nations) was the primary proponet of before Franklin Roosevelt breathed life into this organization has warped into an out of control monster. It should be completely torn down and rebuilt and then place it somewhere like Zimbabwe or South Africa, maybe there they can find there true calling, and maybe save some lives. If you people want to see corruption, go to New York City and inquire about these wonderful diplomats from around the world that make up the UN. You do not want these people involved in making policies that impact your lives!

Monty et al First thing we can do is prevent any more "pre-emptive" wars like Bush's lying entry into Iraq--and threatened similar situation with Iran. We do that by punishing the radical cabal set up by Bush I and Reagan, to make U.S. the world-dominating, oil-snatch bully that preemptive action makes us, leading to absolute certainty of precisely what we now face worldwide --ongoing arms race due to distrust with that foregone attitude surely justified by our demonstrated actions. No oligopoly has ever long succeeded in dominating the whole world; neither will we. Our own democratic pattern, wisely and widely disseminated via peaceful means, may serve to substitute; what other way is there left, with worldwide danger via bombs dominating the dialog, destroying other means for peace until somehow set aside by rational means. Surely "American know-how" and also-demonstrated good will can work for something other than bully-role, can do better for entire world. If NOT, "big bang" sure to come sooner rather than later, with "good-by world" only possible result. Dollars will never do it, especially when expended for such as impossible missile defense. Wise(r), broad(er), strong(er) action by U.S. may just possibly win over sure failure, and guaranteed planet-destruction at end of current path for every nation. United Nations must somehow become more than Untied Nations, with conversation, concentration of attention, and possible compromises always a better way than bombs and violence on the ground.

Sue I really wish the world was such that we could simply spend our taxes in a different fashion, what do you suggest we do so we can accomplish that? I dare say that this recent missle shootdown possibly provided the telemetry data that other types of launch platforms could be used in a similar scenario. Landbased and submarines (rough seas would not matter) come to mind. This technology may even possibly be applied to knocking out or diverting a large meteor/astroid from hitting us. There is a lot of danger out there, and I just don't see a downside. We are in space and future accidents are always possible, so we need to develop methods to protect ourselves. This is just one.
Sue February 21, 2008 12:47 pm (Pacific time)
Monty: If it so great, why couldn't they shoot it down during rough seas? I sure hope any future enemy that wants to shoot a missle at us, waits for calm seas. Glen: Well said
Monty Sells February 21, 2008 11:18 am (Pacific time)
Glen no doubt this current technology, and what the public really knows about it(?), could not stop Russian (and China) multiple warheads but some of these rogue countries could be stopped (for now), and they are the ones that pose the biggest threat (many have submarines that they could use for their shorter range missles). As far as an arms race, it has never stopped! Look what China is doing to upgrade their military as well as Russia, India, Pakistan and on and on. The balance of power has always been the balance of terror, and suicidal dictatorships do not care what civilized nations want or think. Improving our infrastructure is a top priority but defending our nation so we can have an infrastructure is of the highest priority, unfortunately.
Glen February 21, 2008 9:21 am (Pacific time)
Monty: It may have worked with a single satellite which wasn't trying to evade attack, but imagine fifty or a hundred missiles (dummies and real) flying evasively. A missile defense such as the one just used isn't going to work. All it would take is for one missile to slip through and we're toast. We don't want to get into another arms race anyway. Arm races cause nations to invest in weapons they don't want to use. Build a bridge and you have return on your investment for decades. Build a missile and if you have to use it you know it's already too late. You never really get a return on the investment. We have other significant problems to spend our money on.
Monty Sells February 21, 2008 7:48 am (Pacific time)
This was an excellent demonstration of good old American know how. I remember years ago when those who first suggested developing this technology were booed and hooted, well I'm sure thankful they stuck to their guns. This technology has many positive applications and I do not see any downsides to it. Does anyone out there see any negative aspects? I would love to hear them.
