Heeding the Hateful - Salem-News.Com

Sometimes even a bigot is worth listening to, for he may speak truths that others dare not utter.

(MANAMA, Bahrain) - Many years ago, as a college student, I struggled with the issue of who was worth quoting in an article or speech.

Years after, I wrote an article in which I quoted David Duke, a former Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan--a position as bigoted as one can get.

An article I read said, unequivocally, that Duke "is in strong opposition to what he asserts to be Jewish control of the Federal Reserve Bank, the federal government and the media."

Such a position led a number of his critics to label Duke an anti-Semitic neo-Nazi. Even more critics, quoted in Wikipedia, said:

"Duke supports stopping both legal and illegal Non-European immigration, preservation of what he labels Western culture and traditionalist Christian 'family values', strict Constitutionalism, abolition of the Internal Revenue Service, voluntary racial segregation, ardent anti-communism and white separatism."

With all of his own hateful positions against him, including a dozen losing efforts running for political office, one might readily wonder what this Nazi racist could possibly have going for him.

In 2005, Duke published an article supporting anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan. In it, he wrote:

"The Iraq war and her son's death did not defend America from hatred or terrorism ... In fact, the war is massively increasing hatred and terrorism. For every one terrorist killed in Iraq, we are creating thousands more who hate and want to hurt America and Americans. This is the surest way to lose the war on terror, not win it."

Whether this was a moment's epiphany or simply a carefully considered analysis of the facts, Duke uttered a well-stated question of value. It was worth quoting.

Remember that this was 2005, and the question of legitimacy about British and American involvement in Iraq was still being disputed.

Certainly others have stated the same views about the Iraq War, even in the earlier days. Why bother to quote someone who combines having racist, anti-Semitic, sexist and homophobic views?

If someone, like Duke, with his unforgivable views can get the facts leading to a plausible value judgment right, there may be hope for others to appreciate truth even in the sickest minds.

There's also a lesson for all of us in this: one needn't accept everything one says when considering the accuracy of facts or the value judgments others make.

An example of this can be found in the credence that French philosopher/writer Jean Paul Sartre gave to Jean Genet who, as Sartre claimed, arose out of the gutter and in prison to become a writer to be read.

Saved by a number of French writers, including Sartre and Camus and the artist Picasso, Genet was released from prison. Genet wrote five books, an autobiography, a number of plays and poems and dozens of political essays.

In his early days, Genet had been considered a hopeless loser, a petty criminal and a homosexual that would turn many away from wanting to have anything to do with him.

A few people, recognizing his talent and accepting his weaknesses as an abandoned child, vagabond thief, army deserter, and homosexual prostitute who wrote five remarkable books in prison that swept him to the summit of French letters.

Similarly, nothing about David Duke’s associations, failures, racism, anti-Semitism, sexist and homophobic views makes him an authority worth quoting.

What he said in 2005, however, supporting Cindy Sheehan, should have turned his supporters against an enemy-breeding war.

Zahir Ebrahim your below comment illustrates why people of your species are doomed, and why there are hundreds of millions within Western Civilization who have a similar outlook as Dr. Duke. Maybe a review of your own barbaric history will allow you to see the hypocrisy, but the ultimate endgame is the complete eradication of the islamic political cult. Truely evil. Hey enjoy the weekend and the freedom you have in America at the expense of the blood and sacrifice of people far superior to you. Oh, and far more Indians killed other Indians than my ancestors...which was less than 700,000. That's far less than what muslims kill in just one year around the world. When you can provide a scientific primary source on North American history, then you simply will not, because than you'll know that propaganda is all you have.

Your video conversation which I watched on youtube last night is very interesting ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=FJjSzXkm55o ). And so is your apparent transformation from your earlier roots. I am interested in understanding your metanoia. Have you written about it? Can you kindly point me to it?

Dr. Duke, I am surrounded by 'cats' who, expressing this in a parable often used by Muslims, 'having eaten their fill of 900 mice each, have gone for Hajj, and on return, became the most outspoken representatives of the mice trying to convince them that they [the reformed cats] have amended their feline ways'.

Transformations of course, are also the way of spiritual ascendance, like I believe what Malcolm X genuinely experienced. It goes on everyday around us, in ordinary peoples, in different measures, as each of us strive to better ourselves, but we don't often hear about it. Every once in a while, we get to hear of it happening to a very public and controversial person. That gives us a chance to be inspired by it when genuine.

In that spirit, and also the spirit of the overly cautious 'mouse' who refused to accept the cat's platitudes even when it critiqued other felines for their atrocious behavior toward mice, I would like to understand yours, before I pay more attention to your accurate words. I utter the same analyses too, and we evidently share a common enemy. Professor Duke also has an interesting book on the Canadian thugs who kept the liquor flowing during Prohibition, and helped develop our mobster gangs that are still with us today. Just for that we should go up and close all of Canadian commerce and move their entire population into concentration camps. Look how they treat the Indians and other minorities up there. Evil people dwelling to our north. God Bless people Like Dr. Duke who essentially wants people of all races to prosper, he just wants seperation. So do all other races want the same thing. Just research the other race leaderships out there. If we do not seperate, we will be at a time where we must engage in the final self defense...it is happening now in many of our inner cities. In LA, the hispanics are dialing up the violence against blacks to move them out. The national media does not report on these matters. They are the real enemy, and only a handfull of people own and control this global media. In time you will know their home addresses and have recent pictures of them....soon/It's all public record, the same record they use on YOU!
