(SALEM, Ore.) - American superstar freestyle motocross rider Jeremy Lusk, 24, died Tuesday, days after a motorcycle jump of over 100 feet went wrong. Fatally injured from a head injury Saturday night, Jeremy Lusk passed away tonight at approximately 11:03 p.m. due to complications from the crash sustained Saturday evening in Costa Rica, the group DirtNewz.com reports. He was in the process of trying to land a backflip in competition when the crash happened. It was the kind of move this top performer was known for, and also the same move that resulted in a serious crash before. That one he walked away from in 2007. Jeremy Lusk is the first pro rider to die in an AFX contest, although there have been several serious injuries. The LA Times reports that the trick that turned fatal, "involves extending the body away from the motorcycle and grabbing the seat as the motorcycle is upside down, then pulling back aboard as the motorcycle is righted before landing. Lusk clearly had trouble getting back on the seat, and some witnesses said swirling winds within San Jose's Ricardo Saprissa Stadium may have been a factor." Jeremy died in the Calderon Hospital Intensive Care Unit, where he was surrounded by his Mother and Father, Chuck and Gina Lusk, his wife Lauren, his Mother and Father-in-Law Lynne and Larry and many of his closest Mulisha family members including Brian Deegan, Ryan Hagy, Cameron Steele and Erik Apple. The team at DirtNews.com asks that fans keep Jeremy and his family in their thoughts and prayers, adding that all the warm thoughts, comments and support are comforting in these times.
