Government Accountability & Volcanoes Win, Immigration Reform Loses.

(SALEM, Ore.) - On the final list of bills approved today for the Special Legislative Session in February 2008 were requests by State Representative Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer, Newberg, St. Paul).

“We need to limit the Session to pressing issues and I’m hopeful Legislative leaders can do that,” said Thatcher.

She asked for more accountability in state agencies, immigration reform and special recognition for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes baseball team. This morning the House Elections, Ethics and Rules Committee approved two of those requests.

As a member of the House Government Accountability and Information Technology Committee (GAIT), Thatcher asked her colleagues to resubmit Senate Bill 1039 for the 2008 Session.

In a letter she wrote to the Committee last month, Thatcher said, “the GAIT Committee should recommend some kind of legislation for better oversight of state agencies, including a higher quantity and quality of performance audits.” SB 1039 was vetoed by Governor Kulongoski last summer.

The Rules Committee agreed with the GAIT Committee to send a revised version of SB 1039 to lawmakers in February.

The Volcanoes were recently named “National Team of the Year” by Minor League Baseball.com out of 184 eligible teams. Thatcher sent a note to House Speaker Jeff Merkley this week asking for special recognition for the Volcanoes who were Northwest League Champions the past two seasons.

“The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes stand alone…as a state should be very proud of this team,” wrote Thatcher. “A House Joint Resolution in their honor would be very appropriate and timely.” The Rules Committee approved the resolution for the February Session.

Representative Thatcher was disappointed that once again the Rules Committee ignored immigration reform as an issue for the upcoming Legislative Session. Thatcher, who is a member of the Committee, wanted to require proof of citizenship for voter registration.

In a letter to the Committee, Thatcher explained, ”there has been a lot of recent discussion by legislators to ensure people who are issued drivers’ licenses in Oregon are in the country legally, and driving is a privilege. Voting is a constitutional right granted only to citizens, yet we are making no effort to provide proper screening for that process.”

With a crucial election year ahead it’s important to protect the integrity of Oregon’s elections system. 53 laws dealing with proof of citizenship and voter registration have been proposed in 23 other states this year according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. During the 2007 Legislative Session, Thatcher was a Chief Co-Sponsor of two similar measures. (House Bill 2680 and House Bill 3554)

Neal I'm glad that I am providing you with at least some benefit, I wish it was likewise, though you do give some insight into the thinking of the narcissistic mind, and for that I am very greatful ...

Jefferson - it is you who know little of reality and have but the loosest grip upon it. As for when I am right you have yet to prove me wrong on anything while I cannot recall any time that you have been right on anything (your own positions not just agreeing with others). You have no clue how hilarious you are. Makes it all the more amusing. Ah well...

Jefferson December 2, 2007 6:30 pm (Pacific time)

Neal just like a broken clock you are right some of the time (re: alien criminals and the #^%# that hire them). Henry, 20 years of kool aid Krugman, plus a 6 million word man, you are peerless...you could be your own Reality Show. Note: I use "reality" loosely...heh heh

Henry - export the criminal employers who hire illegals? Nah. $100,000 fine per illegal they hire and if over 5% of their workforce is illegal 10-20 yrs in prison to boot. Works for me. Would suck to be Del Monte. Ah well...

Neal Feldman December 1, 2007 9:57 pm (Pacific time)

Let me get this straight... they have time for 'important pressing state business' such as patting the Volcanoes on the back, but no time for irrelevant issues such as checking citizenship status to be able to vote. I got that about right Merckley? Geez what a poltroon. And he wants to be sent to Washington DC? I don't think so. Ah well...

Thtacher thinks shes some kind of Eva Peron, but actually she's more of an Eva Braun.....

Jefferson would rise from his grave and strangle you if he could read your racist diatribes and self-righteous ramblings. And for all your frantic alpha-maleness, you still are afraid to tell anyone your real name..taking instead the moniker "Jefferson"..as if that makes your rancid opinions more digestable...or more American. OK, your turn to slam me...:)

As usual from such low-level moral and mind-bending neocons, response is attack but never next-steps to prepare, protect and provide prosperity for anyone other than the in-group, always well served by such serfs as this one. My Krugman file is twenty years deep; you defile him by yr reference as if led into your personal chasm by him. Re schools, yr dialog reveals "success" you achieved, while you prefer not to state openly here what it was, where, on what topics, and how related to content Comment here. Without that you simply defy, deny and try to defeat what open channel, honest and democratic dialog does for us all...continued learning. Yr egregious words leading this thread are open insults, clearly showing your pattern, plan, tone and moralities. We have 3 classes of readers, it has been stated; it is obvious where you must sit --and do your thing.

Henry, as usual, on a national (and state) level you are not just in the fringe minority, but within the "useful idiot" minority that I'm sure Atzlan and those of similar perspective appreciate. The clear thinking majority of American citizens realize that this criminal invasion if left unchecked will overwhelm our unique American culture, which by the way has nothing to do with the socialist model you seem to be advocating. Going back to the Pilgrims, that collectivization mentality has failed Henry. Have a colonic...read some Krugman to aid that rationalization you are cursed with. P.S. If you were sincere about corporate malfeasance, why are you not asking for Bill Gates, Al Gore, John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi (especially this nutroot!), Ted Kennedy (some say the source of our voting fraud via illegals), ad nauseum to be held accountable? You don't attack the kindrid spirits, your agenda is so obvious, and that is why the public education system needs to be completely dismantled and have all this tax money returned to the people who pay the taxes and voucher out to school systems that can prove they have the ability to teach their students to understand what viewpoints like yours mean to our wonderful country.

Henry Ruark December 1, 2007 10:16 am (Pacific time)

To all: Do we export the criminal low-wage employers, too ? It is their job-supply that now surely creates such traffic in human misery. Where do we send-such ? You will not get any answer from this neocon nonentity. Meanwhile he cashes those divident checks from whose comfort he clearly speaks --as in promise to buy new carb for his very large SUV with kicker check. There's more than one way to buy "opinion"; "see with own eyes" from Comment-tone and content here.

Jefferson December 1, 2007 8:23 am (Pacific time)

Rep.'s Thatcher and Flores have been taking the lead on the criminal alien disaster, so why is the democratic leadership avoiding an issue that the majority of Oregonians want to see some action on? Real simple answer folks, just think about it, and as the American victims continue to mount here in Oregon, and they will, remember those who are aiding and abeting these monsters. You demo cowards hear me?! Hear me Goldschmidt poodles?
