(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Portland Police say Sunday at pproximately 5:30 p.m., officers responded to the Red Apple Bar and Grill located at 16126 Northeast Sandy Boulevard on a call of an armed robbery that had just occurred.

Portland Police Detective Mary Wheat, says officers at the scene confirmed that a man had entered the establishment with a handgun and robbed the bar.

"A Portland Police Officer observed a man in a vehicle in the area of Northeast 162nd and Burnside who matched the description of the robbery suspect," Wheat said.

"Officers began following this vehicle and a few minutes later the suspect ran from the vehicle in the area of Southeast 172nd and Pine Street."

She says the driver of the vehicle stayed in the car and was taken into custody by police and later released.

"The suspect, who ran from the car, was seen running into a residential area. A perimeter was set up, and the East Multnomah County SWAT Team and Portland Police SERT were called to the scene."

Wheat says a search began in the area of the perimeter and a Portland Police K9 team located the suspect hiding in a shed in a mobile home park in the 16900 Block of Southeast Pine Street. Portland Police attempted to communicate with the suspect in the shed and deployed tear gas, according to Wheat.

"Witnesses then saw the suspect run from the shed with a gun and he was then shot by a Portland Police Officer. The 36-year-old suspect was immediately transported to an area hospital and is currently in stable condition."

The name of the suspect is not being released at this time. The officer involved in the shooting is Russ Corno, a 16-year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau and is a member of SERT.

Portland Police Robbery detectives say they believe that this suspect has been involved in numerous armed robberies in the same area over the last several weeks.

The East County Major Crime Team is investigating the officer involved shooting.
