Monmouth Man Killed in High Speed Crash

(INDEPENDENCE, Ore.) - A Monmouth man was killed Monday afternoon in a single vehicle accident on Corvallis Road near Haley Road south of Independence.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says at 3:00 p.m. deputies, Polk County Fire District #1, and Oregon State Police were called to the scene of crash involving a 1989 Honda Civic. According to witnesses, the Civic was travelling northbound on Corvallis Road at a high rate of speed.

The driver, identified as Jacob McClain of Monmouth, lost control of the car just north of the intersection as it went over a rise in the roadway.

Witnesses indicated that the car lifted off the roadway entirely as it went over the rise and just prior to skidding out of control. The vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest on the east side of Corvallis road.

McClain was thrown from the car, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle wreckage was extensive and included the entire engine being thrown from the engine compartment.
