(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Portland Police Officers responded to a call of a sexual assault that had just occurred in the 2900 Block of NE 160th Drive, August 4, 2009 at approximately 2:30 a.m..

Detective Jeff Sharp with Portland Police says dispatchers at 911 received information during the 911 call that the suspect in the sexual assault was possibly still in the area.

"Officers arrived on the scene quickly and immediately set up a perimeter that included a K-9 unit," Sharp said.

"Officers began investigating what had occurred and learned that a woman who was sleeping inside her residence had been awakened by a man who she described as a stranger. This man had broken into the victim's residence and sexually assaulted her at knife point."

He says a few minutes after this incident occurred, the suspect left the residence and was seen outside by the victim's fiance, who had just arrived home from work.

"The victim's fiance quickly learned what had happened and immediately called police and provided a suspect description."

Sharp says officers located the suspect a few minutes later in the area of Northeast 162nd and Sandy Boulevard and took him into custody.

"Detectives from the Sexual Assault Unit responded to the scene and began investigating this incident. Later that night, detectives charged 23-year-old Thomas Allen Wilcox with one count of Rape in the First Degree, one count of Sodomy in the First Degree, one count of Burglary in the First Degree and one count of Robbery in the First Degree."

Detectives believe that Thomas might be responsible for additional property crimes in the area of this incident prior to the sexual assault.

Anyone who may have seen Thomas on the night of this incident is asked to call Detective Jeff Sharp at 503-823-0454.
