Dogface Soldier and PTSD - A Poem

Dogface is the honorific term for Combat Infantry men. Apologies to Rudyard, Kipling & Tommy.

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - Phillip Leveque was a combat infantry soldier in World War Two, long before he became a doctor. His legacy as a physician spans the world but his advocacy of medical marijuana, a legal substance in Oregon, brought about the end of his practice, thanks to the state board of medical examiners.

As this creative writing reveals, the heart and soul of this doctor is that of an injured soldier home from a war who finds rejection and ignorance in the civilian world he rejoins.

I went to the vet’s clinic to ask of PTSD

The receptionist, she laughs, and says “we don’t have that here”

And the helpers in the clinic laugh and fit to die

I outs it to the street an’ to myself says I

It’s “sojer” this and “sojer” that and “ ‘sojer’ go away”

But it’s “thank you Dogface ‘sojer’ when army bands start to play

The band begins to play, my boys the band begins to play

And it’s “thank you Dogface “sojer” when the band begins to play
