How Fair are our Current Tax Laws?

Make no mistake about it, our current political system is driven exclusively by money and power.

(HARRISVILLE, N.H.) - Who do our current tax laws favor? Clearly, some taxpayers should be paying more in taxes... certainly at least their fair share!

There is no doubt that there are rules that create gross inequities built right into our current tax laws. The loopholes that have been built into our tax laws are egregious and every taxpayer with the exception of large corporations should find them offensive.

According to an AP article published on August 12, 2008, “Two-thirds of U.S. corporations paid no federal income taxes between 1998 and 2005, according to a new report from Congress. Please take note of the underlined portion of that quote.

This fact was gleaned from a report created by Congress. This raises the question of why, when Congress itself reported on this issue, has nothing been done to close the loopholes.

It is likely that the army of lobbyists, who scurry around the halls of Congress like vermin in a chicken coop, have a great deal to do with the fact that nothing has been done by Congress. The sole purpose of these individuals is to tilt the table heavily in favor of the special interests they represent.

It saddens me to say it but that is only part of the problem. The other (and possibly larger) piece of the problem is with Congress itself and many of those who warm the seats there.

Power tends to be an intoxicating beverage to many of those who partake and once that brew passes their lips, they will stop at nothing to continue the binge. “Re-election at any cost” seems to become their motto and the special interest groups represented by the lobbyists are only too willing to buy the favors being sold by Congress and thus help them make that motto reality.

Crop after crop of freshmen Congressmen are taken under the wing of the more senior members and become addicted. The initial focus and goals held by these freshmen Congressmen change with the ever-shifting winds of our political system and with the strong tidal influence exerted by the ever-present special interest groups.

Make no mistake about it, our current political system is driven exclusively by money and power. Money pays the price to sway elections through advertising and media air time, while power commands the thrust and direction of both of the major political parties. Nothing else seems to matter to the politicians in our country except getting re-elected (thereby retaining power) and money (to finance re-election efforts).

Is the Tea Party the answer? I seriously doubt it because all indicators point to the probability that it is already has a head-start down the same road that corrupted both of the major political parties.

Believing that something could be done to change our political system into one that is truly oriented toward being “of the people, by the people, and for the people” (as I believe it was originally intended) is a beautiful dream . . . however, it is only a dream and one we wake-up from all too frequently... but, that is just my opinion!

Salem-News.com admittedly, is very critical of both American politics, as well as those of other nations that we perceive is being wrong in their motives and actions. At the same time, within these structures we criticize, are many outstanding people who make each day a better place for all those around them. They embody and personify the American spirit that is sometimes fleeting, but always present. These are some of the things Robert takes into account when writing commentary that is designed reach people, to "get them thinking" in his words, and indeed it does. Some excellent ideas Doug and all appear to be on the right track. I especially think the idea of State (or for that matter, private) banks make sense. I also agree about the Tea Party - right idea but wrong people involved and they certainly ended-up going in mixed directions. I personally don't care if the Republicans or the Democrats have a sensible offshoot that replaces both parties as I view them both as cancerous leisions on the U.S. brain. We need other things badly - like term limits, spending limits on elections, and an easier and quicker route to the recall process. Peace to you Doug, Bob

Fair or Fare?

Thanks for the reply Bob .We have an opportunity right now that can be siezed .The people are fed up,the tea party is a good example but in the wrong direction.Right now I see a very dangerous trend just like the tea party where the Dems look like they might either be the defacto benificiaries of the reaction from the far rights actions or a spin off like the tea party, same party new label . It is too bad that the way it is we cant boot them all at once. I think that you pointed out the biggest problem .Every elected official spends the majority of their time pandering for campain contributions, leaving them little time to do the peoples work and open to all manner of slick salesmen [lobbyists]. The plain fact is they cant truly buy our votes. There is a very good reason the CIA was so interested in Gov Ventura ,he spent a few thousand against more than a million and won . Votes are power ,much more than anyone thinks. So what to do? Start small on a state level with the legislature and Gov. All the power in the state really rests with them. Lets give an example of how it works with people power . Right now there is a bill in the legislature for a state bank [makes sense right keep our money here not being sucked out to some black hole] ,hearing time comes and the line of lobbyists to oppose walks in .Right behind them comes so many people they have to open another room .Soon the lobbyists end up saying well mabey thats something you could try . That was this week I believe. Its no done deal but hey its just an example .REGULAR FOLKS NEED TO LOBBY,RUN FOR OFFICE,GET IN THEIR FACE! Our voice is not being heard because we arent saying a darn thing. Its too big ,Im too busy ,its rigged wont get the job done . Pick an issue ,a candidate ,suggest a bill ,rally, help call for support,e-mail,tweet. Above all keep on trucking, these things dont just happen overnight. So this is what I have decided for myself . I will not vote for Rs Or Ds ,any other will do[my neighbors goat] Instead of crying about how things are I've decided to get involved as long as Im not working I've got plenty of time and when I do go back I will pick one main issue and one main candidate and do my part.Im out for now Peace

Hi Doug: If you have a workable plan to bring that kind of change about . . . I for one would surely love to hear it and my guess is that so would most of Non-Corporate America. I am pretty sure that most of Corporate America believes things are fine and dandy just the way they are. Bob

Dreams become reality when we get off our lazy butts and work to make it happen.
