President Obama’s Remarks on Reducing Gun Violence

Obama knows his staunchest opponents are determined

U.S. President Barack Obama

(WASHINGTON DC) - U.S. President Barack Obama presses on with his effort to reduce gun violence by adding laws regulating the size of clips, and with background checks. In remarks offered today, Obama said:

“I noticed that Nicole and others refer to that day as 'twelve-fourteen.' For these families, it was a day that changed everything. And I know many of you in Newtown wondered if the rest of us would live up to the promises we made in those dark days – if we’d change, too; or if, once the television trucks left, once the candles flickered out, once the teddy bears were gathered up – your country would move on to other things.”

The President spoke directly to those so affected by one of the nation's worst shootings in a school, that happened just months ago in Connecticut. “Newtown, we want you to know that we’re here with you. We will not walk away from the promises we’ve made. We are as determined as ever to do what must be done.“

Obama says that as soon as this week, Congress will begin debating what he calls "commonsense proposals" which the President believes will reduce gun violence. But he says Congress is only going to act on them if they hear from the American people. The gun debate has eroded faith in the system for many gun owners. In spite of the gun violence that continues to harm Americans, a large percentage of citizens say their rights to gun ownership are among the most important that they have.

President Obama knows his staunchest opponents are determined:

“Some back in Washington are already floating the idea that they might use political stunts to prevent votes on any of these reforms. Think about that. They’re not just saying they’ll vote 'no' on ideas that almost all Americans support. They’re saying they won’t allow any votes on them at all. They’re saying your opinion doesn’t matter. And that’s not right.

"I’ve also heard some in the press suggest that what happens to gun violence legislation in Congress this week will be a political victory or defeat for me. You know what? This isn’t about me. And it shouldn’t be about politics. This is about doing the right thing for families like yours that have been torn apart by gun violence, and families going forward.

"When I said in my State of the Union Address that these proposals deserve a vote – that the families of Newtown, and Aurora, and Tucson, and their former colleague in that chamber, Gabby Giffords, all deserve a vote – virtually every member in that chamber stood up and applauded. Now they’re going to deny those families – your families – a vote when the cameras are off and they think no one’s looking? You deserve better. You deserve a vote."

The President clearly acknowledges the uphill battle. He says there are powerful interests that are very good at changing the subject, at amplifying conflict and extremes over common ground, at drowning out rational debate by ginning up irrational fear. That’s what too often stands in the way of progress, Obama said.

"But if our history teaches us anything, it’s that it’s up to all of us – the people – to stand up to those who say we can’t, and stand up for the change we need.

"If you’re an American who wants to do something to prevent more families from knowing the immeasurable anguish that these families know, now is the time to act. Now is the time to get engaged, to get involved, to push back on fear, frustration, and misinformation. Now is the time to make your voice heard from every state house to the corridors of Congress.”

My apologies to Salem-news for posting three times here, and also my appreciation for letting me :-)...I just get so upset about how much obama fibs...I just got this poll, and it doesnt come from my alternative news sources...It comes from mainstream news..ABC. The country does NOT want what obama says. This is mainstream news, not some alternative website ...people overwhelming disagree with obama. In fact, I should take all my posts, make them more professional and submit them to the editor (Tim King), and see if he will post it as an article?

15,000 verified police officers took this survey...Seems as tho obama and biden are not listening to the boots on the ground, the police and the sheriffs..In fact, while talking so much about protecting the police, obama wants sheriffs who do no do what he says..."arrested" look it up...here is the survey of 15,000 police officers. http://www.policeone.com/Gun-Legislation-Law-Enforcement/articles/6183787-PoliceOnes-Gun-Control-Survey-11-key-findings-on-officers-thoughts/

I would highly urge all to take a closer look at what is the major cause of gun violence. "SSRI's". Here is a link that shows hundreds of examples, all documented. Please view and let others know..... http://www.ssristories.com/index.php?p=school .. Maybe they should reprogram obama's teleprompter to start being honest with the American people. Oh but wait, the pharma industry controls obama so he cant talk about SSRI violence...silly me. obama spent most his political career in Chicago, which is now the murder/crime capitol of the entire country. Guess he wants the same for the rest of the country. And I wonder how many of those thousands and thousands of assault rifles from fast and furious are floating around our cities. In the mean time, Standford University releases documents about Pakistan being in turmoil because of all the women and children that are being killed by drones, while only hitting 2% of the suspects. I guess brown babies are not as important as white ones. Feel like I am living in the twilight zone sometimes. p.s. he is fibbing about the majority of Americans wanting all his gun grabbing tactics. And here are a couple short videos, one from a Colorado Sheriff and one from a Canadian Sheriff...Why dont we let those who actually have their boots on the ground speak shall we? canada - http://xrepublic.tv/node/2790 Colorado - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlwgZzeq8oIandfeature=player_embedded
