By LISSA MUSCATINE and MELANNE VERVEER Published: April 1, 2008 Washington AS staff members who traveled with the first lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton, to Bosnia in March 1996, we have followed with more than passing interest the extensive news coverage of her landing in Tuzla. Video footage clearly shows that Mrs. Clinton?s assertions that she landed ?under fire? and that the arrival ceremony was canceled were wrong. She said so herself last week. Yet even since she acknowledged her mistake, the commentary has continued unabated. Reports are now being embellished (to borrow the term du jour) to suggest that Bosnia was not really a danger zone. Her visiting American troops on a peacekeeping mission in a hostile environment is now being treated as if it were a trip to the beach. During a week of nonstop coverage, few journalists went beyond the irresistible video footage to ask what else happened on this trip and how Mrs. Clinton might have erred in the details about the landing in Tuzla. So here are some facts that provide context: We flew in a C-17 cargo plane from Germany to Bosnia precisely because it was capable of steep descents and ascents into and out of areas of conflict. We were issued flak jackets on the plane before landing in Tuzla and were told the tarmac ceremony might be canceled or curtailed due to sniper fire from the surrounding hillsides. The first lady and Chelsea Clinton were moved to the armored cockpit for the landing. Armored vehicles were placed around the tarmac, and Apache helicopters hovered overhead. In a recent e-mail message to a British blogger, Ejup Ganic, who was the acting president of Bosnia during Mrs. Clinton?s visit, wrote: ?I remember that visit quite well. Although the NATO troops were in Tuzla, we still believed that some positions on the hills were occupied by radical Serbs, so I was worried about the overall safety.? The planned welcoming ceremony was shortened, he said, but it still lasted a bit longer than expected because a nongovernment group brought along a little girl to sing to the first lady. Later, Mrs. Clinton flew from Tuzla to two military outposts by helicopter, escorted by Apache gunships. As has been reported, Mrs. Clinton?s trip to Bosnia included a U.S.O. component with the comedian Sinbad and the singer Sheryl Crow. The helicopters that carried them to performances at American base camps zigzagged just above the trees to avoid potential ground fire, according to Carey Cavanaugh, who was then a State Department official traveling with Sinbad, and helicopters flew alongside to deal with the threat of anti-aircraft fire or snipers. These facts explain why many of us, including the first lady, believed that the conditions on the ground were precarious. We were worried about sniper fire and were prepared to rush off the tarmac when we landed. In their single-minded focus on the landing in Tuzla, reporters and commentators have omitted any discussion of what Mrs. Clinton accomplished on her trip. In addition to showing support for our troops and for the peace accords in Bosnia, Mrs. Clinton met with Bosnian religious leaders, women and community activists and, when she returned to Washington, was able to give administration officials her firsthand assessment of the nascent reconstruction effort. After leaving Bosnia, she met with leaders of Turkey and Greece and in those countries promoted efforts on behalf of international development and democracy. In Istanbul, five years before 9/11, Mrs. Clinton presciently convened representatives of some of the world?s major religions to advance a dialogue about religious reconciliation and ways to counter religious extremism. The video of her arrival on the tarmac in Bosnia may be great theater and easy fodder for commentators, but it shouldn?t be allowed to obscure what else was happening on this important trip when the cameras weren?t rolling.

LeRoy B. et al: You wrote: "You can't fight genetics, just can't do it." Yes, you can, as you suggest among those who will...but only by denying century-long, very solid social and cultural and biological and other scientific evidence. And that may be the worst tragedy of this propagandized pseudo-election, now being distorted/perverted by those who profit psychologically via such denial and desperate defense of selves.

When his mother expresses concern about Obama's high school friend being busted for drugs, Obama says he patted his mother's hand and told her not to worry. This, too, prompted Obama to share with his readers a life lesson on how to handle white people: "It was usually an effective tactic, another one of those tricks I had learned: People were satisfied so long as you were courteous and smiled and made no sudden moves. They were more than satisfied, they were relieved -- such a pleasant surprise to find a well-mannered young black man who didn't seem angry all the time." First of all, I note that this technique seems to be the basis of Obama's entire presidential campaign. But moreover -- he was talking about his own mother! As Obama says: "Any distinction between good and bad whites held negligible meaning." Say, do you think a white person who said that about blacks would be a leading presidential candidate?

The below is in Sen. Obama's book and it is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. I was a big supporter of his, but now feel he has been misleading the American people. When the election process begins in earnest the Reagan democrats, the Italian-Americans, majority of catholics, the majority of gun owners and veterans will not vote for him. His history is fair game as it is for all those who want to be president. You simply cannot censor the public record, when you attempt it, it just shows who the real dangerous ones are. The DOD has been fully updated with public posted sources. Revise your methodology and make an attempt at being a professional, of course, that's easier said than done. You can't fight genetics, just can't do it.

Vic et al: Your predictions welcome per any other comment; but none need be insulting, injurious to tone and character here, and entirely scurrilous, per "Anon". For me, that simply "ain't the American way" --and we injure our own community when we stoop so low for obvious cheap-shot with no semblance of reality involved.
Vic April 2, 2008 2:15 pm (Pacific time)
I agree with anonymous....and Id bet it will be Joe (dual-citizenship) Lieberman.
Henry Ruark April 2, 2008 12:42 pm (Pacific time)
"Anon" et al: Your hide-behind-tree and snipe is bad enough but to then add absolute insulting insinuation re Obama is beyond decent-person acceptance here. I challenge you directly to ID self to editor for exchange with me unprintable here. Not so naive as to think you will do so, but if you do, please be prepared to produce anything other than your own perverted and racial feeling for this one. It cometh from much lower than simple bellyb. Your comment stinks of just what is now driving nation as close to ruin as our democracy has ever been, and reflects a nasty, evil and perverted attitude towards all that democracy means to millions of others. Cowardly is as cowardly does, and anonymity fails to cover that construction here.

Below is an excellent video that was just read on the house floor Re: Mrs. Obama, it may make many of you select people so proud of Michelle Obama....
EDITOR'S NOTE: Several comments posted today and yesterday by an anonymous comment poster are by a person who is actually placing posts and arguing with him/herself. Please assume most of the anti-Obama comments are from this party which we have now banned from the site. We have heart for people who suffer from schizophrenia, but they need to perpetuate their arguments elsewhere.

Does not matter whether it's Clinton or the repackaged Malcom X. Senator McCain's VP pick will end up being sworn in next year. Obama will have moved to either Iran or Libya before then. The Clintons will simply be irrelevant. I will give big odds on the above happening!
