Oregon Guard Soldiers Helping Residents in snowbound Detroit and Idanha

Unusually heavy snowfall accumulated in the cities of Detroit and Idanha as a series of snowstorms swept through the region in recent weeks, and the forecast calls for more snow.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - Oregon Guard soldiers shoveling snow near Detroit, Oregon, 2-6-08 Twenty seven soldiers of the Oregon National Guard arrived in Idhana today to assist the snowbound community in its effort to recover from weeks of unusually heavy snowfall.

Upon arrival, senior members of the citizen-soldier contingent met with mayors Idanha and Detroit as well as officials from Marion and Linn Counties to lay out plans for supporting both communities.

In December, the Oregon Guard assisted in the response and recovery phases of severe winter storms that struck the northwest part of the state with high wind and rains.

Double Fatal Traffic Crash on Highway 6 near Banks

Two children were also transported to the hospital with injuries.

(BANKS, Ore.) - Fatal crash near Banks, Oregon, 2-4-08 Two Banks-area residents, including an 8-month pregnant woman, died Sunday night after losing control of their car and crashing into another vehicle on Highway 6 near Banks.

Preliminary investigation by Oregon State Police troopers indicates that Sunday at approximately 10:25 PM, a 1989 Volvo 740 four-door driven by 28-year old Misty L. White was eastbound on Highway 6 near milepost 50 when it lost control on an icy section.

Driver Arrested Following Serious Injury Crash Near Woodburn

Police aren't sure if the cars had slowed or stopped on the freeway just before impact.

(WOODBURN, Ore.) - Crash scene on I-5 in Oregon, 2-3-08 Police say a Salem-area man was arrested early Sunday morning following a four vehicle alcohol-involved injury crash southbound Interstate 5 about three miles south of Woodburn. One person was critically injured and four others received non-life threatening injuries, including the arrested driver who has been lodged in Marion County Jail.

Saturday at approximately 1:00 AM, a 2002 Chevrolet Impala was southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 268 in the left lane when it crashed into the back of 1992 Honda Civic which in turn was driven into several other cars.

Winter Cold Keeps Oregon Highways Closed

Oregon 62, 230 and 138E remain closed.

(ROSEBURG, Ore.) - Snow with cars passing Sections of Oregon Highways 62 and 138E and the entire stretch of Oregon Highway 230 will remain closed through Tuesday, Feb. 5 as downed trees and large amounts of snowfall have made the highways impassable.


"Drivers shouldn’t make plans to travel on these highways until at least Wednesday," said Oregon Department of Transportation District Manager John Vial. He says there is a lot of clean-up work ahead.

Family Injured in Fatigue Related Crash

Serious Injury Crash - Interstate 82 in Umatilla area

(HERMISTON, Ore.) - Photo of crashed truck near Hermiston, Oregon, 2-2-08 One person was seriously injured and three others received minor injuries in a fatigue-related crash when their pickup lost control, crossed Interstate 82 and fell nearly 30 feet onto Highway 730.

Oregon State Police Sergeant Allan Muhs says that Friday, a 2003 Chevrolet four-door pickup driven by 40-year old Vaughn L. Moser of Hermiston, was approaching a sweeping right curve southbound on Interstate 82 just south of the Columbia River Bridge near exit 1 when he reportedly fell asleep while traveling 65 - 70 mph with cruise control on.

Police Investigate Fatal Traffic Crash Near La Grande

A Subaru driven by 63-year Karen Kalac of La Grande, was westbound on Highway 237 when it lost control and crossed into the eastbound lane.

(LA GRANDE, Ore.) - Fatal crash scene near La Grande, Oregon, 2-2-08 Police investigators say a La Grande-area woman died Saturday afternoon when she lost control of her station wagon on Highway 237 near La Grande and crashed with another vehicle.

Highway conditions at the time of the crash were described as covered in snow/ice, and troopers were simultaneously dealing with multiple crashes throughout their patrol area.

Intense Snow Closes I-5 Freeway in Oregon and Northern California

Emergency shelter is available for travelers at the Jackson County Expo Center, located off I-5 exit 33 in Central Point.

(ASHLAND, Ore.) - Road closed Southbound I-5 is closed at Ashland exit 14. Police say traffic had been held up since 5:00 PM as crews cleared the pass of snow and help motorists that had spun out along the highway.

Around the time the pass was ready to reopen at 6:30 PM, snow conditions in California led to a full closure.

Wet Weather Means Travel Chaos in NW (VIDEO)

Additional snowfall from the Cascades, southward through the Sierra and mountain ranges farther inland will be pounded with snow the balance of the weekend into early next week.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Accuweather.com weather maps The constant barrage of winter weather has created travel chaos in the Pacific Northwest. Interstate 90, the main east-west highway in Washington state, finally opened Saturday morning after an avalanche Wednesday buried the highway over Snoqualmie Pass.

Other mountain roads remain snow-packed and icy. A mixture of rain and snow was falling at sea level in the Portland, Oregon, area Saturday evening.

Silverton Road Closed by Fallen Tree

A tree falls across a major street in Salem, closing the at the intersection of Silverton Road and Evergreen Ave NE.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Just after 7:30 AM this morning, Salem Public Works crews were called out to deal with a large Tree that had fallen across Silverton Road NE closing this major street in Salem.

As Salem Public Works responded to remove the tree, all four lanes of Silverton Road were closed in this area. Salem Police report that Silverton Rd NE is now fully open to eastbound traffic and partially open with one lane operating for westbound traffic.
