Linn County Sheriff Office Busy with Weather Related Calls

Advice from the Linn County Sheriff to keep residents safe and alive.

(ALBANY) - Linn deputies in the snow Linn County Sheriff Bruce Riley reports his deputies have been extremely busy over the last few days. Since the snow began to fall last Thursday, deputies responded to 210 weather related calls for service.

These calls included 53 injury & non-injury motor vehicle crashes, 63 motorist assist calls, 76 traffic hazards, and numerous welfare checks, abandoned vehicles, agency and person assists

Road Closure, Sandbag Location, and Flooding Information in Salem

With the amount of rain forecast and the combined melting snow, there is a possibility of lowland and street flooding later this week

Keizer Fire Crews Team Up to Fight Difficult Fire In Snow Conditions

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.

(KEIZER) - Fire in Keizer, Oregon Keizer Firefighters were dispatched to a house fire, en route they were advised that it was "fully involved". Despite snowy roads and an engine that was chained up, the first engine arrived in less than five minutes from the time of dispatch.

At the time of the fire there were two teen males inside the residence, due to a lack of a working smoke detector they were unaware of a fast moving fire in their basement.

Pacific Power crews set to work through night to restore power to mid-Willamette Valley area; Lebanon area hardest hit by serious combination of snow, ice and wind.

(ALBANY) - Power pole Pacific Power crews are entering their second night of battling the elements to restore electrical service to customers in the mid-Willamette Valley.

More than 7,000 customers are without power in the area due to outages caused by snow and ice covered trees dropping on power lines.

Drivers had a challenge trying to keep their vehicles on the road as conditions became very icy and slick.

(SALEM) - Snow on I-5 near Salem, Oregon Thursday was cold and dangerous in Oregon as snow swept through the Mid Willamette Valley, bringing residents of Oregon's capital city and surrounding areas a genuine winter wonderland.

Salem-Keizer Sch. Dist.: Open and operating as usual on Tuesday Feb. 11th. (Effective tomorrow - Tue Feb 11th) UPDATE

(SALEM) - One lane opens on southbound I-5 near Albany--Motorists should still avoid the area Public Works crews worked through the night removing snow and ice from major Salem streets.

Because primary routes are in improved condition the current chain or traction tire requirement will be changed to an advisory as of noon Sunday. Chains are still recommended. Many streets are still hazardous and chains or traction tires may be needed to travel them safely.

Cold Weather Update - Salem, Oregon: Includes List of Warming Locations

Most Salem area malls can be utilized as warming locations while open.

(SALEM) - Red Cross Warming Shelter in Portland, Oregon Cold weather is projected to continue in the Salem area through the weekend. Residents are urged to use caution and allow extra time for traveling. Also, please check in with friends and neighbors who are elderly or may otherwise need support.

The City of Salem has announced two locations available as warming centers until 9 p.m. through Friday, February 7, 2014.

What the Heck is Going on With Snow Refusing to Melt, is it a Hoax or Real?

Heated snow leaves no distinct water or visible moisture...

(SALEM) - A number of YouTube users are posting video of what they say, is snow that will not melt. I am watching the videos that are being added online and it is starting to pique my curiosity.

The first video I watched out of Georgia, had a distinctive cut in the video that would technically, have allowed the reported snowball to be replaced. The individual puts flame to what they say is snow, and it does not melt. In fact it turns black and reportedly smelled like plastic.

On Sunday, more than 11 inches of snow fell in Chicago, slowing road travel, and canceling thousands of flights.

AccuWeather Global Weather Center -- 6 January 2014 -- AccuWeather.com reports thousands remain without power Monday after a snowstorm stretched from the Midwest to the Northeast amid plummeting temperatures and wind chills as low as minus 60 F in some places.

Half of the United States was under a wind chill watch or warning from the National Weather Service Monday morning, with wind chill values 40 to 60 degrees below zero across the northern Plains and Midwest.
