Iran, 1953

While most Americans were ignorant of the 1953 coup that the U.S. was involved in, the Iranians were not.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadeg Iran is back in the news, not that it has been much out of it in the last few years. This time it’s about the outcome of an election that Western countries, particularly the US, don’t like.

Back in 2003, just before the American invasion of Iraq, I predicted (incorrectly as it has turned out so far) that once Bush and co had deposed Saddam Hussein, they would move into both Iran and North Korea—to take care of the Axis of Evil. Then the world would be for…America…to be in control of global affairs again.

Reverend Benny & Mister Sid`s At Your Service #49

The forty-ninth installment of Reverend Benny & Mister Sid's At Your Service, Salem's original cartoon series.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Benny and Sid #49 Summer is here. That's great news. I love the look of lush trees, the feel of the heat of the sun, that sense of freedom that summer brings to school children.

I'm old enough that the sights, sounds and smells of summer trigger memories of when I was a kid with a tantalizing clarity. Sometimes during the transition between spring and summer I feel as if I can just peek under the thin veneer of reality and see what the world really is.

Presidents of Iran, Afghanistan & Pakistan Hope to Stabilize Mideast

The presidents of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan on Sunday signed a joint statement dubbed the "Tehran Statement", at the end of their trilateral summit on regional developments.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com After all of the political bashing and essentially unfounded accusations of nuclear weapon development, it probably seems unlikely to many Americans that Iran would be the country to bring stability to the Middle east.

A historic meeting between Ahmadinejad, President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan and Hamid Karzaithe of Afghanistan, held Sunday, saw discussion of collective trilateral efforts to fight extremism, Islamism and terrorism in the region.

It was publicly announced in March of last year that in spite of claims to the contrary, Israel possesses hundreds of nuclear weapons.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com The Israeli government has been asked by U.S. officials to sign the historic Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Such a request would have been completely unknown even in the recent past. Israeli officials are reportedly unsure of exactly what to do.

With help from the U.S. and other Western governments and media organizations, Israel has been able to keep its extensive long-term U.S.- sponsored nuclear weapons program under the radar for many years. That is, until former President Jimmy Carter spelled it out during a public appearance in Wales last year.

Warriors and War-Makers: Reflections on Memorial Day 2009

America has done some things in its past of which I am not proud. It has done many more things, in my judgment, that merit praise.

(JACKSON, Miss.) - Images of warriors and war makers Memorial Day in the United States is a time for remembrance and reflection. We think of those who have served in our wars, remember in particular those who have died, and hold in our hearts the memories of those whose service and sacrifice have allowed Americans to celebrate our own lives.

This is as it should be, and most countries have similar holidays. Yet in the world in which we live, and whose conflicts are so much a part of our lives, we also need to look hard not only at our warriors, but also at our war-makers: those whose decisions send them into battle.
