Saving Private Bergdahl

The one thing we all have to hope is that the Taliban treat him better than our own country has been treating its captives.

(BROOKLYN, N.Y.) - Bowe R. Bergdahl Let me say from the outset that I have the greatest sympathy for 23-year-old Bowe R. Bergdahl, the US soldier in Afghanistan who was captured and is being held by Taliban forces, and for his family, who must be going through a living hell worrying about what is going to happen to him.

But I’m willing to bet you that all of them are wishing, right now, that the US had not decided back in 2001 to begin a campaign of torture and murder against the Taliban fighters that it was capturing in Afghanistan, and against others that it has rounded up in the so-called War on Terror.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas I see no difference between abortion protesters who murder doctors, or support the act, and the Taliban. They're the same people on a different day in a different place.

Warriors and War-Makers: Reflections on Memorial Day 2009

America has done some things in its past of which I am not proud. It has done many more things, in my judgment, that merit praise.

(JACKSON, Miss.) - Images of warriors and war makers Memorial Day in the United States is a time for remembrance and reflection. We think of those who have served in our wars, remember in particular those who have died, and hold in our hearts the memories of those whose service and sacrifice have allowed Americans to celebrate our own lives.

This is as it should be, and most countries have similar holidays. Yet in the world in which we live, and whose conflicts are so much a part of our lives, we also need to look hard not only at our warriors, but also at our war-makers: those whose decisions send them into battle.

A D.C. group anxious to indict Bush and Cheney for war crimes, alleges that Colin Powell used a prisoner's tortured and knowingly fabricated testimony to tell the United Nations that Iraq was helping al-Qaeda develop weapons of mass destruction to kill Americans. It was all a lie. Now the prisoner is dead from "apparent suicide".

Here's the latest edition in Salem's original cartoon series, found only on Salem-News.com.

(Salem) - Benny and Sid #44 If I write something about what a crime torture is, I get all sorts of people who can tell me why they believe torture is a reasonable thing.

If I write words about how Ron Paul is a great archeologist and the discoverer of the lost city of Atlantis at the bottom of Lake Michigan (soon to be revealed in its full splendor as global warming turns the once great lake into a mud flat), I hear the cry of "Foul!"
