Police Investigating Death of Oregon State Professor

Dr. Sulzman, an associate professor in the Department of Crop and Soil Science, received the OSU Faculty Teaching Excellence Award in 2006.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - death investigation image Oregon State Police detectives are continuing the investigation into the death of an Oregon State University faculty member who became ill while inside her vehicle on the campus Sunday afternoon and later died at a Corvallis hospital.

Oregon State Police troopers and Corvallis Fire Department personnel found Elizabeth W. Sulzman age 40, from Philomath, gravely ill as her conditioned worsened quickly.

No. 25 Oregon State Advances to NCAA Super Regionals

OSU baseball season ticket holders have until Wednesday at 4 p.m. to reserve NCAA Super Regionals seats.

(CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.) - osu player photo Oregon State beat seventh-ranked Virginia 7-3 on Tuesday afternoon to win the NCAA Charlottesville Regional baseball tournament.

Joe Paterson pitched a scoreless final three innings to earn a save to go with his two wins in the tournament for OSU (42-18 overall).

With the win, Oregon State advances to the NCAA Super Regionals for the third straight season.

New Economic Study Examines Effect of Land-Use Laws on Property Values

The study examined the levels and trends of land values in parts of Oregon over the past 40 years.

The study, published this week by Oregon State University economists William Jaeger and Andrew Plantinga, examines the ways in which land-use regulations and Oregon's land-use planning system may affect property values.

Wife of OSU Assistant Football Coach Receives Kidney from OSU Offensive Coordinator

OHSU is home to one of the world's oldest transplant programs, performing the first one in 1959.

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - OSU football logo Oregon State University assistant football coach Mike Cavanaugh and his wife, Laurie have something to be happy about today. Laurie, who is 48, underwent living-donor kidney transplant surgery and removal of both of her diseased kidneys at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital Tuesday, May 29th. Her donor is 34-year old Danny Langsdorf. Both are doing well.

OSU Taking Applications for Middle-School Summer Science Camp

The application deadline is Friday, May 25th.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - oregon state university Oregon State University is taking applications for 48 scholarships to attend the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp for sixth through eighth graders this summer at OSU.

The two-week camp, which will be held Aug. 5th-17th, will offer innovative programs to enhance traditionally underrepresented middle school students’ knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

It also encourages students to stay in school and foster leadership and citizenship.

Eat Your Broccoli: OSU Study Finds Strong Anti-Cancer Properties in Cruciferous Veggies

While many cruciferous vegetables have sulforaphane, broccoli and broccoli sprouts have the highest amount and thus could be a major player in the prevention of prostate and colon cancer.

But what Mom may not have known is why broccoli is so healthy, and how its lesser known, younger offshoot may be a powerful anti-cancer agent.

Researchers at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University have found that sulforaphane – a compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, bok choy and brussels sprouts – has strong anti-cancer properties.

Oregon State Students Vote for Green Energy Fee

OSU will have a new $50 million co-generation facility on campus beginning in 2008.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - osu campus photo Oregon State University students have overwhelmingly voted to assess themselves a fee of up to $8.50 per student each term to pay for “green” energy for the OSU campus.

The proposal passed by a margin of 70.6 percent (yes votes) to 29.4 percent (no), making Oregon State one of the few colleges and universities nationally to pass such a measure.

If the maximum fee is assessed, 100 percent of OSU’s electrical consumption can be offset, according to Brandon Trelstad, the university’s campus sustainability coordinator.

Severe Forest Fire Season Predicted for Western U.S.

In the Pacific Northwest, portions of southern Oregon, northeastern Oregon and eastern Washington are projected to have some significant fires.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Black Crater Wildfire The newest forecasts of summer drought and fire by researchers at Oregon State University and the U.S.D.A. Forest Service suggest the West is in for a fairly severe fire season, brought on by widespread drought conditions and huge fuel buildups in western forests and rangelands.

Among the areas of greatest fire risk, the latest analysis shows, are much of northern California; southern Arizona and New Mexico; and the Great Basin, especially some hot spots in eastern Idaho and southwestern Wyoming.

Oregon State Grad Named 2007 Playboy Playmate of the Year

Sara Jean Underwood grew up in Scappoose, Oregon.

(LOS ANGELES) - Sara Jean Underwood Oregon State University grad Sara Jean Underwood went from Playboy's Girls of the Pac 10 cover to Miss July 2006, and, now, Playmate of the Year.

She appeared on the cover of the October 2005 issue holding a football with nothing but bodypaint on her to simulate her wearing a jersey similar in design to the ones worn by the OSU Beavers football team with matching bikini briefs.

Oregon State Luau will Bring Island Magic to Oregon on Saturday

A concert, featuring Polynesian music by Fiji starts at 9:30 PM.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - OSU luau dancers Oregon State University students are once again bringing a little bit of the islands to Oregon with the university’s 52nd annual Luau on Saturday in Gill Coliseum.

The tradition has grown into one of OSU’s largest and most successful campus celebrations, annually attracting more than 1,000 visitors to Corvallis.

The main show features a range of Polynesian dances performed by Hui-O-Hawaii and Polynesian Cultural Club members.
