Local Businesses Will Sponsor Iraq Coverage: the Countdown is On!

The time for Tim's departure is nearing, and the fact that these Oregon businesses are responding to our call is extremely valuable in accomplishing our goals.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Salem-News.com reporter Tim King is less than eight days away from shipping overseas to cover Oregon Guard troops deployed in Iraq.

Two Oregon businesses, Kadel's Auto Body and the Best Little Roadhouse in Salem, will be sponsoring some of the only media reports coming out of Iraq that specifically cover the Oregon Guard soldiers during their year long tour.

Unpublished Photos From the War in Afghanistan Released

Women, men and children are the most important feature in this landscape here, and I hope the photos do them justice. Most are shot from a moving HUMVEE, but that has its advantages of course.

(SALEM, Ore.) - I left Afghanistan over a year ago, but new video segments and photos continue to emerge from the pile of accumulated media from my two months there last winter.

The still images seem to tell stories that video and sound can be challenged to reach. I guess you could fall back on the old knowledge that sometimes, silence speaks volumes.

Iraq Coverage of Oregon Soldiers Draws Closer

A documentary featuring Tim's work in Iraq is tentatively scheduled to air on Oregon Public Broadcasting.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Tim King Our coverage of the war in Iraq is set to begin in early April and the last weeks stateside are busy at Salem-News.com. I want to give our viewers a concise idea of what to expect when I am over there, and of course I am always open to suggestions on new story ideas.

I will be traveling to Iraq with Evergreen Aviation out of McMinnville, Oregon. The units I will embed with are primarily out of Salem.

(RICKREALL, Ore.) - A sometimes emotional and extremely beneficial fundraiser was held today at Eola Hills Winery in Rickreall, Oregon, to support our upcoming coverage of Oregon Guard soldiers deployed in Iraq.

Their beautiful setting across from the Polk County Fairgrounds dedicated a room to the event that was adorned in red, white and blue table settings.

Hokanson Will Assume Command of Oregon Guard`s 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team

The photos of Dan Hokanson accompanying this article were recorded by Tim King while embedded with the 41st Brigade Combat Team in Afghanistan last year, which Hokanson will now command.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The former commander of the Oregon Army National Guard's aviation unit, Colonel Daniel Hokanson, will assume command of the 41 Infantry Brigade Combat Team, during a ceremony at the Salem Armory Auditorium, on March 8th, 2008.

The ceremony is set to begin at 11:00 AM and it is an event that is open to the public. Dan Hokanson served in various command positions within the Oregon Army National Guard since 1995, after almost 10 years in the Active Duty Army.

Oregon National Guard Responds to Possible Anthrax Scare

The incident was a hoax. Still if convicted, the individuals who left the envelopes face possible prosecution under federal anti-terrorism laws.

(ALBANY, Ore.) - One of the newer units in the Oregon National Guard worked closely with local first-responders and civilian emergency agencies during an incident in Albany, Oregon, today.

Members of the Oregon National Guard's 102nd Civil Support Team were called to the Linn County Courthouse located at 300 SW 4th Ave. in Albany, after workers found two envelopes containing a suspicious white powder.

National Guard General Officer Retires After 37 Years of Service

(SALEM, Ore.) - Brigadier General Raymond C. Byrne The Oregon Army National Guard's Brigadier General Raymond C. Byrne, will be honored at a formal Retirement ceremony on Sunday, March 2nd at 3:00 PM at the Anderson Readiness Center in Salem.

His most recent assignment is the Assistant Adjutant General (Army) position, as such he acts as The Adjutant General in his absence. Byrne assumed duties as the Acting Adjutant General for the Oregon National Guard in October of 2003.

Veterans and Spouses to Receive Economic Stimulus

Additional provisions of the package secured help for struggling homeowners. In Oregon, interest rates for the ODVA ORVET Home Loan program are nearing 30-year lows.

(SALEM, Ore.) - American soldiers on a patrol in Kabul, Afghanistan President Bush has signed the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008. The economic stimulus package includes a cash rebate to recipients of certain veteran benefits.

Some disabled veterans and spouses who receive at least $3,000 from any combination of Social Security and certain veterans' benefits will receive rebates.
