Searchers Reach 8 Climbers Stranded on Oregon`s Mt. Hood

The 3 additional climbers who reportedly fell over a ledge are located some 150' down a steep section of the mountain very close to the rescued 5 climbers.

(MT HOOD) - Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue personnel have announced that the rescue team dispatched to assist the 8 climbers are making great progress with this ongoing mission despite whiteout conditions on Mt. Hood.

The rescue personnel are with the 5 climbers who were directed earlier to take shelter in a snow cave.

These 5 are being assisted down the mountain at this time.

UPDATE: Five Climbers Located, Three Still Missing on Oregon`s Mt. Hood

Three climbers fall, five others told to build a snow cave.

(MT. HOOD) - At noon today, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office received word that a total of 8 climbers were in the area of Illumination Saddle.

The elevation was estimated at 8,320 feet.

For some unknown reason 3 of these climbers had fallen an undetermined distance.

The 3 climbers who have fallen are not visible, or in communication with the remaining members of the climbing party.

UPDATE: Salem Based Oregon Guard Helicopter Launches to Aid Injured Female Hiker on Mt. Hood

The UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter from the Oregon Army National Guard departed Timberline Lodge en route to Hogs Back and had the rescue underway at 9:40 PM.

(Mount Hood) - The Oregon Army National Guard launched a Blackhawk helicopter Tuesday evening for a night rescue operation on Mt. Hood where a 45-year old woman who had been hiking, received injuries.

Equipped with night vision goggles, the crew departed Salem at approximately 5:30 PM to conduct the rescue hoist operation near a place called Hogs Back on Mt. Hood.

Two People Injured in Snowmobile Crash on Mount Hood

State Police are seeking witnesses to the Saturday morning crash.

(MOUNT HOOD) - A rented snowmobile carrying two young Portland men crashed in the Mount Hood wilderness area approximately 1/2 mile southwest of the intersection of US 26 and Skyline Road.

It happened Saturday morning around 8:45 AM.

The operator, 16-year old George Paskar and the passenger, 20-year old Rubin Yahchuk, were both wearing helmets according to investigators. There were no reported witnesses but evidence indicates that the snowmobile missed a corner and ran into a tree.

One Hiker Found Dead on Oregon`s Mt Hood

The identity of the hiker's body found by searchers has been revealed.

(HOOD RIVER) - The body found Sunday in a snow cave on Mount Hood has been identified as the same climber who placed a distress call to relatives a little more than a week ago.
A military official involved in the search also confirmed the body is that of 48-year old Kelly James, of Dallas, Texas.
Monday morning, a Chinook helicopter was preparing to fly to the snow cave, about 300 feet below Mount Hood’s 11,239-foot summit, to recover the body.

Rescue Teams Continue Search For Three Missing Climbers on Mt. Hood

A UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter from Salem will help in the search if weather conditions improve.

(MT HOOD) - Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Search & Rescue personnel on Mount Hood report the search continues for the three missing climbers.

The lost climbers, two Texans and a New Yorker set out to climb the mountain on Wednesday.

Three Climbers Missing on Oregon`s Mt. Hood

The climbers are reportedly well equipped but packed light for a quick trip.

(MT. HOOD) - Rescuers are searching Mount Hood today for three missing climbers.

The men left the Cooper Spur ski resort to climb up the north side of the mountain and then down the south side to Timberline Lodge.

Authorities say the Hood River County 911 dispatch center received a call around 10 AM on Sunday after the three climbers failed to arrive at the Timberline Lodge on Saturday night.

Popular Mt. Hood Snow Play Area Closed

White River WEST Sno-park is CLOSED due to flood damage.

(SANDY) - Mt Hood National Forest says that because of damage caused by the November flooding, the White River West Sno-Park along Highway 35 can not be opened for winter snow play.

Approximately 8 acres of the snow play area have been washed away by the White River.

About 3 acres of parking have also been eliminated in this recent flood event.

Senators Say Congress Should Pass Legislation this Year.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Speaking today before a congressional panel holding a hearing on their legislation to permanently protect more than 128,000 acres of wilderness on Mount Hood and in the Columbia River Gorge, U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith said Congress should capitalize on the momentum behind the bill and pass the proposal before the end of the year.

The Wyden-Smith legislation represents an increase of almost 70 percent over existing wilderness protections. The Senators’ bill also would grant Wild and Scenic River protections to more than 80 additional miles of rivers in Oregon.

Civil Air Patrol Nearing End of Seismic Survey

Civil Air Patrol wings from several state are participating.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, along with other CAP Wings, is nearing completion of it's participation in an extensive six state seismic survey mission in cooperation with the United States Geological Survey and the and the California Office of Emergency Services Clearinghouse that is being conducted from August 16th through August 31st.

The CAP in Oregon was operating out of Willamette Aviation at the Aurora State Airport as well as bases in Medford, and Eugene. Other CAP wings (states) participating in the exercise were California, Alaska, Hawaii, and Nevada with Oregon covering targets in Washington as well.
