DoD Will Listen to Internet Companies at Roundtable Discussion Thursday

Defense Information Systems Agency Vice Director Rear Admiral Elizabeth Hight will conduct a roundtable Thursday at the Pentagon.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Soldier at a base computer The Defense Department is taking a number of Internet organizations seriously in their complaint over a ban of sites like YouTube and MySpace.

The government says it stems from soldiers using too much bandwidth and they also call it a security compromise. But many soldiers overseas say it is nothing more than an attempt to restrict information.

YouTube Wants to Meet With U.S. Military Over Web Ban

Feedback from soldiers indicates that they are anything but happy about losing access to the sites, and the list may be longer than the government is admitting.

Soldiers say they are not in support of the government ban, they see it as an attempt to reduce the flow of information. One says the government has even clamped down on a soldier's ability to purchase vital equipment, "you can't go onto eBay anymore at some sites across Afghanistan."

Op-Ed: Government Bans Soldiers From Internet Sites

Soldiers have few if any options for passing the long hours. Staying in touch with family and friends on Myspace was one of them.

(SALEM, Ore.) - YOUTUBE Military forces in the war theatre are already banned from alcohol and sex. Porn sites are screened by the Department of Defense, but the latest move by the military remove a soldier's access to Myspace, YOUTUBE, and other sites Monday strikes many as an unnecessary discipline that will only lead to a plunge in morale.

A spokesperson for the DoD says the department's computer systems are being used more often for personal surfing, decreasing Internet availability and presenting security risks.

USDA Narrows List of Individuals Whose Private Data was Exposed

The USDA will offer free credit monitoring for one year to people whose private identification information was exposed.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - usda logo photo The U.S. Department of Agriculture has narrowed to 63,000 the number of people whose private identification information was accessible to the public on a government-wide website and who will therefore be eligible to register for free credit monitoring services.

The 63,000 people were awarded funds through the Farm Service Agency (FSA) or USDA Rural Development (RD).

The USDA became aware of the potential exposure of such information on April 13th, when USDA was notified by a recipient of USDA funding that she was able to ascertain identifying information by viewing the website.

Virginia Tech Launches Memorial Website to Honor Shooting Victims (VIDEO)

The website is for individuals to share their condolences, thoughts, and prayers.

(BLACKSBURG, Va.) - bush at virginia tech State, local, and federal law enforcement officials continue their round-the-clock investigation of the multiple fatal shootings that took place on the Virginia Tech campus the morning of Monday, April 16th.

Within the past 24 hours, a search warrant was executed on the dorm room of Cho Seung-Hui, 23, in Harper Hall. Investigators are still determining the evidentiary value of papers and assorted items seized from the room.

In a note left in his dorm room, Cho laid out a list of grievances in which he railed against "rich kids" or "debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans" on campus.

Marion County Now Offers Online Building Permits

The county joins the state’s 24-hour-a-day e-permitting service.

(SALEM) - employment news photo Instead of driving to the county office and waiting in line, contactors can now buy simple permits from Marion County any time of the day or night, seven days a week via the Internet.

The site, hosted by the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services’ Building Codes Division, allows contractors to apply and pay for multiple permits from multiple jurisdictions in one transaction.

Marion County Building Inspection is the 15th building department in the state to offer over-the-counter electrical, plumbing, and mechanical permits through the program.
