Top Comments: The Stories on Salem-News.com That Really Got People Talking

The stories that received the highest number of visitor comments in 2009 on Salem-News.com

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com news images Comments, comments and more comments, that is our life here, day in and day out. We decided at the very beginning of our existence in the summer of 2004 that people should be allowed a voice, and interactivity took a big step forward.

Needless to say, the story about the Ukrainian couple who were ultimately convicted of abusing five of their six children, was the most talked about story of the year, hands down.

The Hottest Stories of 2009 on Salem-News.com

A look at the people and the top stories of Salem-News.com in 2009.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com This is certainly one of the most interesting pieces that I have the pleasure of writing each year. The stories that make the top twenty for 2009 are probably not so much a reflection of the average Salem-News.com viewer, as they are of general national interest.

The viewers who account for those numbers are often arriving at Salem-News.com because they found a story that interested them on the Google feed, or one of many other search engines, blogs and news aggregators that carry links to our stories.

Foreign Policy Magazine Article Skews Facts About TV Industry

TV Saving the World? Desperate Housewives a remedy for 3rd World problems? Foreign Policy Magazine goes off the deep end.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com The 'Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' analogy may be a little overdone, but I also think it qualifies as an over used strategy in this world. It simply references a deceptive act against a person, it happens all too often.

A magazine that I have subscribed to for many years, Foreign Policy, published an article titled "How TV Can Save The World" in their November 2009 issue that appears to serve little real purpose aside from a feeble attempt to save an industry threatened by a superior technology.

My Son Has the Swine Flu: A Daily Journal

If you have a child that is stuck home with the swine flu and ends up like my son, with negligible symptoms, your biggest problem will be his boredom

(AGOURA HILLS, Calif.) - Swine flu We just went through the swine flu with our older son, Will. We didn’t panic or allow the hysteria of the msm (mainstream media) to scare us. His first reaction was simply, “Darn, I’m going to miss Halloween.”

With the swine flu, we’ve been deluged with scare reports from the media, ignoring the fact that each year tens of thousands of Americans die of the regular flu.

Can Families Avoid Playing Favorites?

Congratulations to Bruce Sallan for his 50th Salem-News.com article!

(AGOURA, Calif.) - Salem-News.com Sitting in Starbuck’s the other day, waiting for my car to be serviced, I sat next to a mom who shared a “dirty little parenting secret.” Her kids, and she and her husband, have “favorites.”

She gets along better with their younger child while her husband gets along better with the older child. I believe that this is natural, ubiquitous, and something most parents are ashamed to admit.

On Writing, Music and Creativity

In my teens, I knew I was going to be a writer.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - Salem-News.com Most writers take years to become themselves; to transform their preconceived notions, idiosyncrasies, preoccupations, attitudes and mannerisms into a personal style. For Franz Kafka, who was an exception to so many rules of life and literature, it only took a single night.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, 1912, the day after Yom Kippur, the 29-year-old Kafka sat down at his desk and wrote “The Judgment,” his first masterpiece, in one all-night session.

U.S. Senator Wyden`s Position on Net Neutrality Upheld at FCC

Senator Encouraged that “Change has come to Washington”

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Salem-News.com The FCC will prevent Internet service providers (ISP) from being able to act as gatekeepers, favoring their own applications or services over those provided by others and blocking or slowing certain Internet content. The senator’s statement follows:

“The FCC did the right thing today. They said loud and clear that in America, the consumer is going to stay in control of how they use the Internet – not the well-connected, well-funded service providers,” said Wyden.
