U.S. Senator Wyden's Position on Net Neutrality Upheld at FCC

Senator Encouraged that “Change has come to Washington”

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Extolling the economic benefits of a free and open Internet provided by the policy of net neutrality, U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) released a statement today in response to the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) vote to begin writing net neutrality regulations.

The FCC will prevent Internet service providers (ISP) from being able to act as gatekeepers, favoring their own applications or services over those provided by others and blocking or slowing certain Internet content. The senator’s statement follows:

“The FCC did the right thing today. They said loud and clear that in America, the consumer is going to stay in control of how they use the Internet – not the well-connected, well-funded service providers,” said Wyden.

“The Internet has become a mainstay of the nation’s economy, whose health rests on forging net neutrality as a bedrock principle that businesses know will always be upheld. The FCC’s decision demonstrates that change has come to Washington. They’ve proven they won’t be swayed by lobbyists and PR campaigns and that’s exactly how it should be.”

Wyden is a long-time advocate for net neutrality, having introduced the first legislation in Congress to preserve a neutral Internet. On March 2, 2006, he introduced the Internet Non-Discrimination Act of 2006 to codify net neutrality into law.

For his efforts, Wyden was named one of the 50 most important people on the web by PC World magazine in 2007.

In 2006, Wyden killed the Telecommunications Reauthorization Bill because it would have ended net neutrality, by placing a hold on it for the remainder of the session.

Senator Wyden has continued to advocate for codified network neutrality protections during and has urged the FCC to aggressively police Internet Service Providers who are alleged to have broken the rules of network neutrality.

Wyden has also fought to protect Internet providers from discriminatory taxes and from content-related litigation.

For all you critics of the FCC out there, below is more grist for the mill: Rush Limbaugh's interview with Chris Wallace on 11/1/09 is going to be the only thing the MSM is talking about on Monday, then it will be the 11/3 elections. When asked what he thought of Obama's trip to Dover to visit the remains of soldiers brought home from Iraq. Limbaugh said "It was a photo-opt. It was a photo-opt precisely because he is having big time trouble on this whole Afghanistan dithering situation." He didn't stop there, though. He hit on everything you wanted him to. Even why he calls President Obama a man-child. Here's the link for the videos: http://storyballoon.org/videos/rush-limbaughs-interview-with-chris-wallace-on-fox-news-sunday/ Here's a partial transcript: Wallace:This week it will be one year since Barack Obama was elected President. In that time what has he done for and to the country? Rush: I think it's all to. I don't think there's any for. Chris, I'm really, really worried we've never seen this kind of radical leadership at such a high level of power in the country. I believe that the economy is under siege. Is being destroyed. Anybody with any economic litercy would not do one thing this admin has done to try and revitalize the private sector. They are destroying it. And I have to think that this may be on purpose. Because this is just outrageous what is happening. The denial of liberty an attack on freedom. Just a couple days ago they talked about the 650,000 jobs that they've created or saved. There's no such thing as a saved job. Besides that they've destroyed jobs. They've lost 3.3 million jobs in this country since Obama's stimulus plan and it's going to get worse. Wallace: But wait a minute. How about saved the country from a financial abyss? 3.5% growth in the third quarter in GDP Rush: There wasn't any growth in the private sector. That 3.5% came from two things. Government spending on cash for clunkers. They just moved 4th quarter auto saves into the 3rd quarter. And the first time home buyer thing. GDP = CIG, that is consumers investment of business and government. And it's all G, it's all government There is no private sector growth there were no new jobs being created. We're losing them...

When I was going to high school Fitness guru Jack LaLanne visited for an assembly presentation . The drama teacher who was the stage manager stopped Jack from taking off his sweatpants , only the top . I worked on stage crew and thought it pretty funny at the time . Jack who is mostly vegan looks great at 95 , my dad looks good at 92 but not like Jack . My father consumed almost no red meet growing up , just a little chicken and fish . Jack's teacher Paul Bragg was also vegan , Paul died in a surfing accident in his 90's . The population is bombarded 24/7 with junk food commercials , I am just presenting a little information the mainstream does not cover . I realize I am just a voice crying in the wilderness but I see more and more of this small population of the aware increasing . I also see the damage done by the junk food industry and it breaks my heart . like many my age I have witnessed too many close friends and family come to an early and often painful death . I see people suffer with all types of aliments who are years younger than me . Its just heartbreaking especially the really young .

Ryan or engle or who ever you are today , I am glad you asked for some facts . Dr william castelli M.D. director of the Framingham study , running from 1948 , states . " The vast majority of ALL cancers , cardiovascular disease and other forms of degenerative illness CAN be PREVENTED simply by adopting a plant based diet " . Dr T. Colin Campbell director of the Cornell China -Oxford project and former senior science advisor to the American Institute for cancer research states . " If you change to a VEGAN diet you CAN reverse heart disease , you can prevent it . you can I believe prevent cases of CANCER if you combine dietary changes with avoiding tobacco . The list go on and on and on too numerous to link in these post . Please do your own research you may enlighten yourself ! The family farm has been replaced by the super mega corporate farm and ranch . Again for those interested on meat production and depletion of grain and water resources please google it the information is too vast to list here . Also the cost benefit from this dietary change to the health system is upward to 60 billion per year . I will provide links upon request .

Ryan October 28, 2009 12:58 pm (Pacific time)

Daniel where are your facts? You're the vegetarian attempting to close down the different meat ranchers and other businesses selling meat products right? You have a cost benefit analysis for that myopic perspective? This poster is not any kind of operative, just a retired guy having the time of my life being retired.

Daniel October 27, 2009 10:35 pm (Pacific time)

There you go again engle another vague fact-less post thats just tries to attack but provides no substance . You seem more worried about 10 year old technology , sold under Clinton , then the realities of the last ten years . China's domination of the USA is economic , we are still a military super power . You do not kill the cash cow ! Your post always try to tie all the problems created over the last decade on the Obama administration that inherited the colossal mess less than a year ago . You are astonishingly naive or a political operative spreading disinformation . !

Engle October 27, 2009 2:19 pm (Pacific time)

To say that the military build up in China is not being done for comprehensive global interests (including neutering America) is astonishingly naive. Even assuming the absurd notion of America's passiveness towards China, we would in time represent a threat to China's trend towards global domination. A brief review of world history may provide those who think in that manner a different analysis grounded in reality as per historical patterns of power. In terms of reviewing deficits, unemployment and other economic indicators just notice the trend for 2009 along with current and projected policies that insure that downward trend, unless of course you buy into jobs "saved" not "created."

Daniel October 26, 2009 7:26 pm (Pacific time)

Just a few more words about the trade deficit with china . When Clinton came to office the deficit was 18 billion , when he left eight years later the yearly deficit with china was 83 billion . At the end of George's w first term the deficit went to 162 billion per year , when he finished his second term it was over 268 billion per year . This last year it has gone down slightly because of the recession . Clintons total deficits with China were 397 billion , Bush 2 deficit total was 1429 billion dollars , yes thats almost 1 and a half TRILLION DOLLARS almost four times the clinton total . Today we owe China over 3/4 of a Trillion dollars . They have been buying up Africa and the third world and are working with the worst governments in those areas . The military buildup is not aimed at the USA cash cow but controlling the third world and its natural resources .

Daniel October 26, 2009 2:57 pm (Pacific time)

Vic BTW cow dung from a grass Fed cow is antiseptic and has been used medicinally in india for thousands of years . Cow consumption leads to a 50% heart attack rate in the USA and out of site colon cancer rates . We also use vast amounts of soy to force feed cattle . The USA soy crop could feed 25% of the world if used directly , instead it largely goes to hydrogenated oil and cattle feed . There is a 20 to 1 loss of food by feeding it to animals instead of to humans , not counting the vast amounts of fresh drinking water used . The cow by nature can not eat soy or corn so we use vast amounts of antibiotics to keep it from the reaction . There is a shortage of antibiotics in 3rd world country and the USA population is building up resistance by constantly eating antibiotic residue in the meat . Its kind of like saying save the world and the starving as long as i do not have to make a personal sacrifices to do it . Vic continue with your lifestyle but remember you were warned today about having a heart attack or colon cancer prematurely , but in the future it may be too late . You can take a horse to water but you can not make him drink . I also appreciate you prospective thanks .

Engle October 26, 2009 2:55 pm (Pacific time)

Vic a couple of presidential administrations ago that president provided China with some miltary technology that may someday be the end of us. Sophisticated "Gyroscopes" that has allowed them to build guidance systems for their quickly developing war machine. Maybe there are some posters here who are "real" experts that can tell you what a serious mistake that was rather than from people who just post via their uncontrolled emotions and misleading gut? Have you been following recent federal court actions and the convictions of those who provided illegal campaign funds given to specific individuals and who they are hooked up with? As many say, follow the money, whether it's Wall Street or foreign nationals.

Daniel October 26, 2009 1:08 pm (Pacific time)

Vic never said Israel was not was not a problem and is responsible for repression and murder , you read too much into my defense of Wyden . I have been speaking out about this for over 30 years . I said while you were worried about the cougar the large tiger is biting us in the ass . Israel has a population of about 8 million , China a population of about 1400 million . Israel is used by the US as a strategic base in the middle east , and is armed for this purpose , just as Sadam's Iraq was armed to the teeth by us . We helped Iraq kill over 500,000 Iranians in its 8 year war . Israel is used as a tool by the US , more than the other way around . Israel is a repressive democracy of sorts , its neighbors are mostly royal despots with extremely repressive governments for the common person . It is also an area with large amounts of oil needed for our industrial base . The wood product industry and mills did not go to Israel they went to China . The textile industry was not put under by Israel but by China , the same can be said for a number of our good paying industrial jobs . China is also deforesting the 3rd world at a rapid rate by importing hugh volumes of illegal raw logs and has become the largest polluter greatly increasing global warming . China has a multi billion dollar trade surplus with us not Israel . China combines the worst of Communism with the worst of capitalism and represses hundred of millions of its own people , including forced sterilization . Vic we do supply China with billions in trade , so they have plenty of money to by the best armaments worldwide . A number of the weapons China buys are made in the USA , they buy them thru 3rd parties . Wyden gets a lot of support because he is good with the elderly not because he is a militarist . Vic please check his record , actions speak louder than going to aipac meetings . The USA killed and injured more civilians in a few days of the Iraq war then Israel did in its entire history . China also has millions living in the most squalid conditions , sleeping on cardboard on the street . Israel is a USA puppet used as a forward middle east base , China is sucking the life out of this economy and is a repressive dictatorship . Vic give yourself another 10 years , my age , and wisdom may come .

Vic October 26, 2009 7:16 am (Pacific time)

Daniel...I agree re China, but we are not sending weapons to China,or vetoing every single UN resolution critical of China. We do not supply China with drones, missiles and fighter planes. If we did, we would be complict in whatever attrocities they were used for. However, our trade finances the Chinese military, no doubt. My annoyance with Israel and her behavior is because we are directly funding and supporting it. Do you think Israel would be so brazen and aggressive towards all her neighbors, if it wasnt for the fact that the US has sworn to defend it no matter who is the aggressor? Your argument reads somewhat like this....Israel is bad, but China is worse, so leave Israel alone..? Would that hold up in court? "Sure, I raped her, but I should be aquitted because other rapists would have killed her too"..I dont understand why even after Tienamen Square, China retained Most Favored Trade Nation status, except that it was good for US businesses. If Ron Wyden is not cowtowing to Israel, why is he among the top ten recipients of AIPAC money? Are they so ignorant that regardless of how a politician votes, they give them money? Why Wyden? I think AIPAC money is earned by constant proof of one's loyalty and unwavering support for Israel. I do not agree with their agenda and believe that AIPAC should be registered as an agent of a foreign country, as it is, but I dont think they are stupid or reckless when it comes to handing out funds. Maybe Wyden has been fooling them all this time. RE the Uighurs and the Chinese repression, I do not like that either. The bombs and weapons the Chinese use are not, however Made in USA, unlike the weaponry used against the Gaza and West Bank concentration camps. Unfortunately because of the business relationship the US has with China, they could do anything they wanted and the US would not blink. As far as eating dung...well that would be your choice not mine..:) I do appreciate your posts and opinions, and admit that even at 52, I still am not the possessor of all wisdom. (give me a year)

Daniel October 25, 2009 7:07 pm (Pacific time)

Vic i would also like to point out as a 40 year vegetarian I would rather eat cow dung than its flesh . Its cow consumption that causes hunger , food imbalance , clean water shortages , death and suffering to millions thru out the world , perhaps you should check your own house before throwing stones at others . You are not in a position to change global policy but you are in a great position to change your own . Physician heal thyself ! I might also point out there is nowhere in my posts that paint you as anti jewish , you read to much with your emotions that color your understanding . You also post to much from the gut , this often takes away from your point , which I often agree with .

Daniel October 25, 2009 3:58 pm (Pacific time)

Vic my opinion of Wyden is only based upon his record . Please point out any bills he sponsored or cosponsored that dealt directly with Israel . I am not a big fan but find him better than most . China is much more repressive than Israel . How often are we exposed to these truths via the mainstream media . Israel gets worse press than China , the Chinese government uses the most repressive means to control the population and crush any ethnic minorities , Think Israel and multiply it a 1000x's . China's latest butchery was just a foot note in the media , most Americans could give a hoot because they have no idea of whats going on . The Israeli BS and repression is carried world wide , China is blacked out . The US had a 685 billion dollar trade deficit last year with the bulk going to CHINA . Unfortunately the economies of China and the USA have become too closely intwined , and its to late to take any effect action without a hugh ripple . Why you were watching the Israeli oppression the Chinese government and American businessmen and politicians sold the country out . I have been speaking out about China for over 20 years ! Tell me vic you seem informed and well read , what was the latest repression by China it was only a few weeks ago . A hint it involved crushing repression and murder of an ethnic minority . How about the no pollution control smog that is drifting over to Oregon from China's chocking cities ?

Vic October 25, 2009 7:44 am (Pacific time)

Daniel..I never said anything about Wyden's religion. Dont try to paint this as some kind of anti-Jewish thing. I dont care if he is an athiest, Rastafarian or Moonie. Claiming a religion means nothing to me. Some of the most un-Christian people I know are in my own family, trumpet their "christianity", and attend church regularly, yet are among the most racist, warmongering, arrogant, and self-righteous people I know. And this "in all fairness" thing......if I were found to be a serial rapist and were arested, would people make comments like "in all fairness, Mr Pittman has given a lot to charity and has fed homeless people"...I dont think so. What if I were not a rapist, but an apologist for and supporter of a state that carries out murder and ethinic cleansing daily and keeps millions of people in a constant state of despair and misery? Wyden reminds me of a delicious beef stew..with a turd in it.. "In all fairness" there are a lot of good things in it, the carrots are lovely and the beef is sooo tender...but then there is that turd. You gonna eat that? You can have mine too.

stephen October 24, 2009 9:43 pm (Pacific time)

Agree Vic. I have seen, time and again, people like wyden support things that get him elected, and get more popular, but never follows through. He is not on board with Ron Pauls "audit the fed". That speaks volumes in itself. almost 300 congress critters are in support of "audit the fed". Wyden may talk, but when it comes to the serious matters, I know where he stands. With israel and their zionist bankers. By the way, those zionist bankers just took over 2 trillion dollars of our money, and put us on the hook for possibly 24 trillion overall. While they laugh their way to the bank.

Vic October 24, 2009 10:38 am (Pacific time)

All I know is that Wyden has consistently been among the top fifteen recipients of AIPAC lobby money according to the Washington Report on Middle Eastern Affairs. He is #10 out of all the senators in terms of money received during his career, getting nearly a third of a million dollars. He is a "key speaker" at neraly every AIPAC meeting. So no matter what he does, there is always an underlying question of his loyalty. Does he work for us or Israel? Do we want a double-agent representing Oregon?

Daniel October 23, 2009 8:28 pm (Pacific time)

Vic In all fairness Wydens political focus has been on seniors , children's health and protection and environment protection and benefits for veterans . He sits on aging , natural resource , health and finical committees . Not one of the over 200 bills he sponsored or cosponsored had anything to do with Israel . He has been head and shoulders over Bob Packwood . He has also po me a few times such as his eco- terrorism stance . Not all jews are blind followers of the conservative AIPAC , in-fact most Jewish Americans are progressive , not neocons . Some of the strongest critics of Israeli policy are ,Jewish such as AMY GOODMAN and NORM FINKELSTEIN , listen to Democracy now . The AIPAC wants people to think they have blanket support from all Jewish Americans , this is not the case , and is used as a tool by them . The biggest beaters of the drum for Israel have been conservative right wing non jewish politicians and commentators using people like Alan Dershowitz , who is a true neocon , to make there case .

Vic October 23, 2009 6:49 am (Pacific time)

Now I would like to see Ron "Israel First..Never Missed an AIPAC Meeting" Wyden, attempt his greatest challenge....Middle East neutrality. I'm not holding my breath.

Daniel October 22, 2009 10:59 pm (Pacific time)

Good Job Ron unlike mccain who is taking the side of big business again !
