(SALEM, Ore.) - Tina Miller is with the Salem area Farmer's Market. Salem, Oregon's Farmers Markets are in full swing, providing business opportunities for local agriculturists and great shopping for local residents and visitors. The event's Day Market Coordinator Tina Miller says there are many reasons the events are doing so well.

The market runs from April through October. the Saturday market runs from 9 to 3 every Saturday, and our Wednesday market runs from 10 to 2, and that's located between Liberty and High Streets.

The Hidden Immorality in a Food Bank

The ideal solution is that food banks should be totally funded by government. That way the costs are spread across society and no one free rides.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - Food bank I remember when the first food banks were set up in the early 1980s in response to the declining economic conditions. They were supposed to be a temporary measure. Now they’re everywhere.

There are now huge numbers of homeless people—including families with children. In Calgary last spring, an overnight census was done with over 4,000 homeless people counted. But everyone knows the number is higher, perhaps much higher. It’s no different in other large cities across North America.

Salmonellosis Outbreak Traced to Pepper Spices; Break Came in Testing at a Portland Restaurant

The contaminated pepper was packaged under the “Lian How” and “Uncle Chen” labels and sold to restaurant suppliers and markets – much of it going to Chinese and Vietnamese establishments.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Contaminated pepper sold to restaurant suppliers and markets Public health officials in Oregon and three other western states have tracked a multi-state outbreak of salmonellosis to ground pepper imported, packaged and distributed by a California company.

Union International Food Co. of Union City, Calif., immediately announced a voluntary recall of ground black pepper and white pepper as well as a number of other products that could have been cross-contaminated in its manufacturing facility.

Food Stamp and Cash Assistance Demand Continues at Record Levels

A total of 535,000 people – or 277,000 households – received the benefit in Oregon last month.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Niki Carpenter (L) helps Oregonians receive economic assistance in the Department of Human Services Bend office. The increase in the number of people receiving food stamps in Oregon during the past year is greater than the population of Medford; workers continue to scramble to help struggling Oregonians.

January 2009 brought the biggest increase of the recession in the demand for temporary cash assistance and food stamps in Oregon - - and the need continues at record levels.

UN Agency Launches `Operation Lifeline Gaza` to Feed Thousands of Hungry

As of yesterday, the violence had already killed an estimated 792 people and wounded over 3,200 in the occupied Palestinian territory, according to reports cited as credible by UN officials.

(GAZA) - A Palestinian child eats home-made bread in the southern Gaza town of Rafah The United Nations food agency today announced an initiative to help ramp up food distribution to the growing number of hungry people in the Gaza Strip, where a military offensive Israel says it launched in response to Hamas rocket attacks is in its 15th day.

Operation Lifeline Gaza is a World Food Programme (WFP) scheme aiming to provide ready-to-eat, culturally acceptable food to hundreds of thousands of people caught in the conflict.

“We are proposing an immediate, innovative solution to hunger in an unusually challenging situation, where many people are suffering from a complete breakdown in access to food and clean water,” said WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran.

Oregon Food Bank Releases 2008 Voices Report

Oregonians share their stories as hunger continues year-round.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Hunger "It's either buy food or take your medicine. It's a real hard choice."

"There are times when you have to choose between milk and diapers."

Those are just two comments from Oregon Food Bank's 2008 Voices report, released today. The annual report summarizes focus-group feedback from emergency food recipients around Oregon.

"With the high cost of food, utilities and rising unemployment, more of our neighbors are struggling with hunger," said Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski.
