Salem House Fire Blamed on Improperly Installed Chimney

One firefighter received a minor injury while pulling a fire hose inside the structure. He was evaluated at the scene, but was not transported.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem, Oregon house fire, 12-12-07 Salem firefighters arriving on the scene of a structure fire at 843 Dove Avenue NE today say they had light smoke coming from the front door of the single-story home. The single alarm fire had been called in just before 3:00 PM.

Fire Department Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says that with the use of a thermal imagining camera, firefighters discovered fire behind the brick chimney of the fire place.

Tangent Fire Sponsors 1st Annual `Shop with a Firefighter`

Funding for this project has been provided by generous donations to the volunteers, and fund raisers held by the volunteers.

(TANGENT, Ore.) - Tangent, Oregon Shop with a Firefighter Firefighters of Tangent Fire and Rescue sponsored its 1st annual “Shop with a Firefighter” program. Firefighters within the Fire Department volunteered their time to go shopping with two families, which were not going to have much of a Christmas, due to unfortunate financial circumstances.

Erich Schoen with Tangent Fire and Rescue says the families were taken Christmas shopping at the local Target store in Albany. The participating families were pre-screened by a local agency to insure eligibility. Each family had approximately $400 dollars to spend on each other.

Fire-Safer Cigarette Credited for Saving a Life in Oregon

Oregon is the 9th state in the nation to set aside tobacco manufacturers arguments that safer-cigarette technology was unproven.

(TIGARD, Ore.) - Safer cigarette artwork State fire officials say a Tigard nursing home avoided potential tragedy recently when a fire-safer cigarette self extinguished after a resident fell asleep while smoking.

Oregon Governor Kulongoski signed Oregon's safer cigarette legislation in April, requiring only fire safer-cigarettes be sold in Oregon beginning January 1st 2008.

Jefferson Firefighters Assemble and Deliver Christmas Baskets Saturday

Also on Saturday morning, Santa will ride through town on a fire engine, arriving at the Jefferson Community Center at 10:00 AM. He will be handing out candy to all the little visitors.

(JEFFERSON, Ore..) - Jefferson, Oregon firefighters The Jefferson Volunteer Firefighters will once again be preparing and delivering food baskets to those in need living within the Jefferson, Talbot, and Millersburg communities.

Fire District Spokesperson Elaine Parrott says beginning at 8:00 AM this Saturday morning at the Jefferson Fire Station, firefighters will be assembling food boxes, and loading them on fire engines to distribute to those in need within the community.

Apartment at YMCA Evacuates Entire Structure

All portions of the YMCA were evacuated during the incident including the main YMCA, apartments and child care.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Photo of YMCA fire in Salem, Oregon 12-11-07 Salem firefighters knocked down an apartment fire that broke out this morning at the YMCA, located at 685 Court Street NE in Salem. Fire Department Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says the call of "Smoke in a Structure" came through at 8:22 AM.

"When firefighters arrived on scene, they had smoke coming from the second floor of this three story brick building. This portion of the YMCA is used for apartments."

Parade Means Canby Firefighters Will Brave the Weather Tonight

Canby Fire encourages residents to come out and get that foul weather photo.

(CANBY, Ore.) - Canby Fire This bad weather will not stop Canby Firefighters from their annual neighborhood parades supporting Canby area family's by collecting non perishible foods and toys, says Canby Fire Spokesman Troy Buzalsky.

He says tonight's parade starts at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds at 6:30 PM, and will run through various neighborhoods until it finishes at N Pine and 99E.

Jefferson Home Damaged by Fire

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

(JEFFERSON, Ore. ) - fire investigation Jefferson firefighters respond to a house fire at 453 Huron Court in Jefferson Tuesday evening.

The homeowner, Ynette Defehr arrived home, opened her garage door and noticed smoke. She felt the hot door handle that led into the house and knew she should not open the door. She immediately vacated and called 911. She saw flames through the living room window.

Fire Severely Damages NE Salem Home

Nobody was hurt in the 2:07 PM fire.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem, Oregon house fire, 11-25-07 A Salem woman was surprised today to learn that a loud boom she heard actually came from her own garage. Salem Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says it happened just after 2:00 PM when the occupant/owner at at 2244 Greentree Drive NE, Michelle Montoya heard a large boom.

"She first thought that it came from down the street so she was looking out her window trying to determine where the boom came from. Her dog started to bark and she went to check what he was barking at. That is when she discovered the fire inside her garage."

California Flames Destroy 49 Malibu Homes

Flea, bass player for the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, told the Los Angeles Times that his home had been "burned to a crisp."

(MALIBU, Calif.) - malibu california For the second time in just over a month, fire is racing through the Malibu Canyon, and for the second time, residents were forced to flee. Officials say that as of Sunday morning, the fire was 40% controlled with no further homes in imminent danger.

Forty-nine homes have been destroyed, another 27 damaged, up to 10,000 people evacuated and 4,650 acres burned in the fire which has been determined to have been caused by humans.
