Former Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber will deliver keynote speech at the University of Oregon event.

(EUGENE) - Former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber The third annual Oregon Economic Forum will focus on the growing problem of health care costs and the burden being placed on the competitiveness of Oregon's private employers.

Keynote speaker and former Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber will describe a national model for health care reform. Kitzhaber founded the Archimedes Movement, which encourages engagement and effective action to improve the delivery of health care.

University of Oregon Projects Increased Number of Freshmen to Attend This Year

New freshmen enrollment at the U of O is expected to exceed 3,100.

(EUGENE) - U of O campus University of Oregon officials expect final tallies to show that more than 3,100 freshmen will start their studies at the university this fall.

This number is up by nearly 100 students from the previous year.

"While the number of freshmen is expected to increase dramatically, the total enrollment should remain well within the university's goals for managing growth at a level that allows us to serve students well," said Martha Pitts, director of admissions.

Lane County Funeral Home Owner Arrested

Oregon State Police and Springfield Police Department have been conducting the investigation into Franklin since August 1st.

(OAKRIDGE) - Springfield Oregon Police logo Oregon State Police arrested the owner of Oakridge Chapel of the Woods Funeral Home Monday evening related to an investigation into allegations that she was cashing in funeral-expense insurance policies for clients.

On Tuesday, 39-year-old Carolyn Ruth Franklin, aka: Carolyn Hardman, from Springfield, was taken into custody without incident at her home.

University of Oregon Researcher Seeking Arm, Hand Amputees

The research will be used to probe how the brain reorganizes in absence of limbs.

(EUGENE) - Amputees running A University of Oregon researcher is seeking people, ages 8-65, who have lost an arm or hand for a study designed to probe the effects of limb loss on brain activity.

Participants will need to commit to one three-hour appointment during which they will undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) while they plan movements and undergo sensory and motor testing.

Subjects will be reimbursed for their time ($20 per hour), travel expenses, meals and overnight stays, if required.

Firefighters Getting Upper Hand on Willamette National Forest Fires

The majority of the fires are single trees that were struck by lightning.

(EUGENE) - Firefighters made good progress Wednesday on the numerous small fires that are scattered throughout the Willamette National Forest.

Afternoon winds and warmer temperatures increased fire activity at 3 locations and each of those fires grew to approximately 5 acres in size.

In general, though, cool temperatures, the efforts of ground crews, helicopter water drops, and retardant delivered by air tankers are limiting fire spread.

Alesia Walker of Riverside, California, says her son was wrongly convicted in Lane County by a system that failed to turn up key witnesses who could have cleared him.

Stampede Continue Winning Ways, Down Eugene 107-97

Up next for the club is a home game Friday against the Portland Chinooks

(EUGENE) - The Salem Stampede improved their record to 3-0 Friday night by beating the Eugene Chargers 107-97.

The Stampede were led by Ramon Taylor who had 28 points.

Guard Jeff Dunn had 25 points, and center Eric Fiegi chipped-in 24 points for the Stampede.

Eugene, also new to the IBL this year, was led by Michael Harper who poured-in 26 points.
