Lawsuit Filed to Overturn Latest Spotted Owl Critical Habitat

(PORTLAND, OR) - Northern Spotted Owl Today, the American Forest Resource Council joined the several other groups, in a lawsuit to overturn the latest Northern Spotted Owl critical habitat designation.

The case was filed in federal District Court in Washington, D.C., against the Secretary of Interior and the Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Fish Caught off Fukushima Show Record Levels of Radioactive Cesium

Record cesium level detected in fish caught near Fukushima nuclear plant.

(KYODO Japan Times) - Fukushima as it was struck by disaster Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Friday it detected a record 740,000 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium in a fish caught in waters near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

That is equivalent to 7,400 times the state-set limit deemed safe for human consumption.

(NEWPORT) - Oregon fishing trawler Researchers working with the groundfish fishing industry in the Pacific Northwest have tested a new “flexible sorting grid excluder”.

It is a type of bycatch reduction device that shows promise to significantly reduce the incidental bycatch of Pacific halibut from commercial bottom trawl fishermen.

(WASHINGTON DC) - Calvert Cliffs-3 nuclear reactor in Maryland NRC Commissioners today upheld the denial of a construction/operating license for the proposed Calvert Cliffs-3 nuclear reactor in Maryland.

The decision marks the first time in history that NRC Commissioners upheld the denial of a license for a commercial nuclear reactor, and only the second time a license for a commercial nuclear facility has been denied.
