(CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.) - Marine Corps flag There are few people who know more about the Marine Corps' contamination problems at Camp Lejeune, N.C. than Jerry Ensminger. Jerry lost his daughter Janey to cancer, which he later learned was connected to the toxic water at the Marine base.

His concern now is an attempt to shift the heaviest responsibility and thus the control of providing Camp Lejeune victims their health care away from the Veterans Administration and place it on the Department of Defense.

Americans have a right to expect the health care crisis to be solved by leaders in Congress.

Weekly Oregon H1N1 Influenza Update

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has allocated another 100,604 H1N1 vaccine doses to Oregon expected by Friday, Dec. 4, bringing the cumulative total to 765,508, enough to vaccinate 39 percent of the priority group.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Thermal scanners operate to check passengers' body temperature at the airport at Bulgarian capital Sofia. The number of H1N1 influenza hospitalizations and deaths appears to be waning, but people are still getting sick and being hospitalized throughout the state. In Oregon during the past week, 59 people have been hospitalized and three have died.

Since Sept. 1, 2009, 1,242 people have been hospitalized in Oregon with influenza-like illness; 52 people have died.

(SALEM, Ore.) - vaccine bottles Since Sept. 1, 2009, 1,105 people have been hospitalized in Oregon with influenza-like illness; 40 people have died.

Based on data collected nationwide and in Oregon, while vaccine supplies are limited, public health officials are urging local heath departments and tribes to target vaccine outreach to the people who are at greatest risk for hospitalization and death.

(IRVINE, Calif.) - Salem-News.com I get really fired up when I consider the Marines that I served with on the flightline at El Toro, dying and suffering from cancer. The idea of their kids and even grandkids suffering diseases borne from the toxic chemicals dumped for half a century on the Marine base and then absorbed by our bodies and passed down to theirs, is even more sinister.

Knowing that I lived and breathed this toxic contamination for over two years makes me feel dirty in a way that I never knew before, it is an inherited liability that we didn't ask for but still possess.

Senate Hears Testimony on DoD Toxic Soup

A growing awareness of serious toxic waste on military bases is getting national attention.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - El Toro Marine base summer 2009 The Defense Department is the biggest owner of EPA Superfund sites. Over 130 military bases are on the National Priority List.

In his opening statement today, Senator Daniel Akaka, Chairman, Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, noted the requirement for the VA to provide health care and compensation to veterans who were harmed by exposures while in the military.
