Therapy Turns to Beautiful Art at The Oregon State Hospital

Patients at the hospital take great pride in their work, which is displayed throughout the hospital for all to enjoy.

(SALEM) - It may look old and worn out on the outside, but on the inside, beautiful, and colorful hand painted artwork hangs from the walls for all to enjoy.

Patients at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, are using culture and art as part of their therapy and daily living.

Patients work extremely hard on the artwork both as individuals, and as groups to help them learn and understand about different cultures from around the world according to George Bachik, Director of Social Work at the hospital.

Celtic Culture and Zydego Music Take Center Stage at World Beat 2006

(SALEM) - A martial arts performance by black belt John Olivera Oregon`s capital city hosts the 9th annual Salem World Beat Festival at Salem Riverfront Park June 24th-25th, 2006.

Author Victor Villasenor to Speak, Sign Books at Salem Public Library

Villasenor "Burro Genius," the first book of a planned second trilogy, was released in July 2004, is a national bestseller, and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

(SALEM) - Author Victor Villaseor Victor Villaseñor persisted through 265 rejections of his first novel, Macho!, before it was finally sold. He persisted and proved 265 publishers wrong as he inspired comparisons to "the best of Steinbeck" and went on to more than a dozen novels, collections of short stories, children's books, and non-fiction books.

He will talk about his life and his work in a special appearance at 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 3rd in Loucks Auditorium at Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St. SE.

His talk will be followed by a book signing. Books will be available for sale at the event.

Murals Cross Generations at Reed Opera House

The relationship between art, history and the people of the Mid-Willamette Valley is old and established, yet vibrant and alive. At the center of downtown Salem history is the Reed Opera House, and sonewhere around the Reed each day is an artist named Kev Kohler, armed with a paint brush and inspiration.

(SALEM) - Artist Kev Kohler painting elevator doors at the historic reed Opera House The spirit of art is alive and well in Oregon`s capitol city, according to Dallas, Oregon artist Kev Kohler. He`s been staying busy in recent months by completing a number of murals at the Reed Opera House in downtown Salem. The historic Reed dates back to 1870, and Kohler`s work when complete will represent many generations of people who have passed through the building`s halls.

Salem Video and Film Festival a Big Hit

Event is one of three festivals set for Salem this year

(Salem) - Organizers of The Mid-Valley Video and Film Festival say the event was a huge success, with excitement, exhilaration, and lots and lots of great local talent presented on the big screen at the Northern Lights Theatre on Commercial in South Salem.

Sundance Finalist to Appear at Mid-Valley Video Festival

(Salem) - Sundance Sundance may be over and the Oscars yet to come, but Northern Lights Theater Pub is hosting a festival of their own Feb. 24th, 25th, and 26th: the third annual Mid-Valley Video Festival.

The festival began as a one day event at the Elsinore theater two years ago. Now it has expanded to an entire weekend and outgrown its original facilities. Over 14 hours of submissions are being sorted through. In addition, there will be a consumer advocacy screening of the Salem-filmed movie `One Flew Over the Cuckoo`s Nest.`
