Heart Gallery of Oregon Opens Wednesday at State Capitol

Hundreds of Oregon children statewide are in need of permanent homes.

(SALEM) - Oregon State Capitol building The Heart Gallery of Oregon, a traveling photographic display featuring adoptable children, will open on Wednesday with a reception at the State Capitol
Galleria.

The exhibit features images capturing the spirit and personality of foster children needing permanent homes. Professional photographers from across the state have donated their time to the gallery, which features approximately 40 children.

Empty Bowls Fundraiser Hopes to Help Hungry in Salem

So far this year, 4.4 millions pounds of food has been distributed to hungry families through a network of 70 member charities.

(SALEM) - Bowls come in all shapes, sizes and colors -- especially at “Empty Bowls,” the fifth annual fundraiser for Marion-Polk Food Share, hosted by the State Street Merchants in downtown Salem.

On Salem’s First Wednesday, December 6th, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at US Bank, Ladd & Bush Branch, 302 State Street, nearly 300 handmade bowls will be ready to sell.

With each purchase, a free simple meal of soup and bread will be served by Wild Pear Restaurant and Cascade Banking Company.

Yost to Open Art Gallery In Alessandro’s Restaurant Friday

Entrepreneur Roger Yost is adding art – and lots of it – to the menu of his Alessandro’s 120 Ristorante and Lounge.

(SALEM) - Roger Yost “The New Galleries at Alessandro’s” are scheduled to open Friday, December 1st within the 12,000 square foot restaurant, Alessandro’s 120 Ristorante.

The galleries will initially feature the original oils and limited edition “giclee” prints of 12 internationally acclaimed artists – Andrew Atroshenko, Mikhail and Inessa Garmash, Avtandil Makharoblidze, S. Sam Park, Tim Rogerson, Viktor Shvaiko, Sophie Sirot, Denard Stallings, Thomas Stiltz, Svetlana Valueva, and Vladimir Volegov.

Corvallis Fall Festival This Weekend

The 34th annual Corvallis Fall Festival takes place this weekend in Central Park.

(CORVALLIS) - Laura Kemp performer and songwriter The Corvallis Fall Festival includes a major arts and crafts show, children's activities, 1K, 5K and 10K runs, music entertainment such as blues, West African drum and dance, folk, jazz, funk, and more.

Plus, Saturday night there will be a street dance from 6:00-10:00 PM. The group Stairway Denied will perform live music from the legendary rock band, Led Zeppelin.

The festival is free, and runs Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Olympia Vernon Reads at Friends of the Library Event

(SALEM) - New Hallie Ford Chair Olympia Vernon New Hallie Ford Chair Olympia Vernon will read from her novels Monday, September 18th at 4:30 PM in the Hatfield Room of the Hatfield Library at Willamette University. Light refreshments will be served at 4:15 PM. The reading is free to the public.

Olympia Vernon’s raw and formidable talents are on arresting display in earlier novels, “Eden”and “Logic.” Her third novel, “A Killing in This Town,” is a taut, poetic masterpiece that exhumes a horrific epoch from the annals of the American South.

There is a menace in the woods of Bullock County, Miss., and not only for the black man destined to be lynched when a white boy comes of age. The white men who work at the Pauer Plant are in danger, too, but they turn a deaf ear to the black pastor’s urgent warning that the factory is slowly killing them.

Museum Hosts Lecture and Film Series

Nancy Floyd’s brother Jim was killed in 1969 in the Vietnam War.

(SALEM) - Flyod wall photo The Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University will host an illustrated slide lecture and four-part film series in conjunction with its current exhibition, The James M. Floyd Memorial: An Installation by Nancy Floyd, which is on display until Oct. 21st in the Study Gallery.

Mixed media artist Nancy Floyd will discuss her work from the past 20 years, including the 1986 creation of The James M. Floyd Memorial and its relation to her most recent work, from 5:00 to 6:00 PM Sept. 15th in the museum’s Roger Hull Lecture Hall.

The James M. Floyd Memorial: An Installation by Nancy Floyd

The James M. Floyd Memorial was first shown in 1986 in Los Angeles and League City. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was shown in Washington, D.C., where it was included in War and Memory at the Washington Project for the Arts.

(SALEM) - James M. Floyd Memorial Contemporary artist Nancy Floyd’s installation dedicated to her brother who was killed in the Vietnam War will be on exhibit Aug. 5th to Oct. 21st in the Study Gallery at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University.

Floyd created the installation, The James M. Floyd Memorial, in honor of her brother Jim, who was killed in 1969. Floyd will give an illustrated slide show lecture about her work of the past 20 years, including The James M. Floyd Memorial, at 5:00 PM Sept. 15th in the Roger Hull Lecture Hall at the museum.

The lecture is free and open to the public. A preview reception will follow from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the lobby and galleries downstairs.

The museum also will host a free, four-part film series, Vietnam: On the Frontlines, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM Sept. 14th and 28th and Oct. 5th and 19th in the Roger Hull Lecture Hall.

Oregon Arts Commission Announces Grants to Over 100 Oregon Arts Groups

Many grants were awarded to organizations in Salem, Corvallis and the Oregon coast.

(SALEM) - Hailie Ford Art Museum The Oregon Arts Commission has announced $655,500 in grants to 102 Oregon arts organizations awarded through its FY2007 Operating Support, Arts Services and Arts Learning Grant programs. “The organizations supported with these funds demonstrate the strength and breadth of the arts in Oregon,” said Cynthia Addams of Keizer, chair of the Arts Commission. “The Commission is pleased to be a partner in funding so many arts activities that benefit Oregon and its people.”

“The arts are integral to Oregon’s quality of life, community development and overall climate for growth,” said Christine D'Arcy, executive director of the Oregon Arts Commission. “From Pendleton to Oregon City, LaGrande to Medford, more Oregon communities use the arts to strengthen community ties and capacity.
