James Leads US to Gold Medal

(LAS VEGAS) - USA basketball photoBehind a USA Olympic qualifying record 31 points from LeBron James, the USA Men's Senior National Team (10-0) opened and closed the FIBA Americas Championship 2007 gold medal contest to chants of U-S-A from the crowd after putting on a dazzling, 40-minute display that earned the USA a dominating 118-81 win over rival Argentina (8-2) in Las Vegas, Nev.

The USA, which qualified for the 2008 Olympics with its win in Saturday night's semifinals, extended its unbeaten streak in Olympic qualifying play to 36 consecutive wins, a run that dates back to the 1992 Tournament of the Americas.

Johnson's 28th career NASCAR NEXTEL CUP Series victory doubled as his series-best fifth victory of 2007. It also ended a four-month victory lane drought for the No. 48 car and the defending NEXTEL CUP Series champion as Johnson held off Edwards' and the relentless Busch.

Kanaan Wins at Belle Isle; Patrick Career Best Second

But "if" became the operative word when the anything can happen axiom came to the forefront late on the demanding 2.070-mile, 14-turn Belle Isle circuit.

Oh, Kanaan claimed his fifth victory of the season. But a bizarre twist of events and carbon fiber with two laps remaining gave the No. 11 Team 7-Eleven driver renewed life in his drive for a second series title.

Western Oregon Downs Willamette, 23-9

Western took a 9-0 lead in the first quarter on a 39-yard field goal by Bruce Voges and a 1-yard touchdown run by Ben Kuenzi.

(MONMOUTH, Ore. ) - wou sports logoWestern Oregon University built a 16-0 lead in the first half of its 23-9 win over Willamette University on Saturday at McArthur Field.

Even so, Willamette outscored the Wolves 9-7 in the second half and ended the game with an impressive 10-play drive for the final touchdown of the night.

The non-conference season opener matched the Bearcats, who compete in NCAA Division III, against WOU, which competes in NCAA Division II.

Georgia Tech Rocks Notre Dame in Season Opener

Tashard Choice, the leading rusher in the ACC last season with 1,473 yards, rushed for more than 100 yards for an eighth straight game

(SOUTH BEND, Ind.) - Georgia Tech logoGeorgia Tech didn't need a secret weapon.

It had Tashard Choice.

Choice rushed for a career-high 196 yards and two touchdowns and the Georgia Tech defense had little trouble with any of Notre Dame's replacements for Brady Quinn, shutting down the running of Demetrius Jones and the passing of Evan Sharpley and Jimmy Clausen in beating Notre Dame 33-3 on Saturday.

Dixon, Oregon Too Much for Houston, 48-27

The Ducks next play at No. 5 Michigan who were shocked Saturday by I-AA Appalachian State, 34-32.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - Oregon Dennis DixonQuarterback Dennis Dixon ran for 141 yards, including an 80-yard scoring dash, to lead Oregon a 48-27 victory over Houston on Saturday.

Dixon also completed nine of 15 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns for the Ducks (1-0) in a wild game that included three touchdowns in less than a minute.

Anthony Alridge had 22 carries for 205 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars (0-1). Alridge also caught three passes for 88 yards and a score.

But the unheralded 18-year-old from Poland ended all talk of Sharapova’s on-court fashion, not to mention of her quest for a second US Open title.

Radwanska, who was not overwhelmed by Sharapova’s power and played consistent, crafty tennis, took out the 2006 US Open champion and No. 2 seed, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

No. 9 Virginia Tech Holds Off East Carolina 17-7 in Season Opener

Wheeler hauls in career-best seven catches for 81 yards and a score.

(BLACKSBURG, Va.) - virginia tech imageA career game by tight end Sam Wheeler and a defensive touchdown by Victor "Macho" Harris helped the No. 9 Virginia Tech football team to a 17-7 season-opening victory over East Carolina (0-1) Saturday in front of a sell-out crowd of 66, 233.

Wheeler gathered seven receptions for 81 yards - both career highs - and scored the insurance touchdown for the Hokies (1-0) early in the fourth quarter on a 21-yard reception from quarterback Sean Glennon.

Glennon finished the day 22-of-33 for 245 yards after overcoming an interception on his first play of the game.

Appalachian State Shocks No. 5 Michigan, 34-32

(ANN ARBOR, Mich. ) - michigan football photoMike Hart rushed for 188 yards on 23 carries, including a brilliant 54-yard gallop for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as Appalachian State upset the No. 5 University of Michigan football team, 34-32, Saturday, in Michigan Stadium.

The speedy Mountaineers owned a 28-17 halftime lead, but Michigan rebounded, scoring two touchdowns to take a 32-31 lead in the fourth quarter.

However, ASU's Julian Rauch hit a 24-yard FG with 26 seconds remaining, and Jason Gingell's 37-yard attempt for U-M was blocked.
