(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski has proclaimed Friday to be "VFW Day" in Oregon. The VFW of the United States has more than 1.8 million members and 600,000 auxiliary members serving at over 8,500 posts worldwide.

The organization has grown from local groups founded in 1899 to help obtain health care and pensions for those who fought in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection.

In his official proclamation, the Governor said VFW members work to secure adequate benefits for the courageous men and women who defend America's freedoms while promoting patriotism and community service.

"This nation is kept strong and free by the loyal citizens who preserve our precious freedom heritage through their positive patriotic declarations and actions," the Governor said. "We honor that service and sacrifice that is made on behalf of our veterans."

Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs Director Jim Willis, a VFW member, said the tradition, advocacy, patriotism and service of this organization represents the best Americans have to offer.

"The VFW coalition of forces contributes more than 20 million volunteer service hours every year. From raising money for troop-support programs to promoting youth development, good citizenship, and honoring our nation's veterans, VFW members worldwide are the silent heroes in our local communities," Willis said.

The Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs joins Governor Kulongoski and invites all Oregonians to recognize VFW members statewide.
