(CANBY) - Firefighters from Canby were dispatched to a bicycle accident in the 800 block of NW 1st Street.

Crews arrived on the scene at 5:00 PM and found a 10 year-old boy who had crashed on his bike and suffered serious injuries to his face, head and shoulder.

Paramedics activated LifeFlight, and the boy was flown to Legacy Emanuel Hospital's trauma unit.

Indian Larry

Witnesses told Canby Firefighters that the boy was standing on his pegs and letting go of the handle bars while riding down a steep downhill grade, similar to famed chopper rider Indian Larry.

"Apparently the handlebars rotated, which caused the boy to be thrown literally over the handle bars," said Canby Firefighter and Paramedic Matt Dale. "Most of the injuries were to the head and face," noted Dale "And he was not wearing a helmet!"

Neighbors who witnessed the crash called 911, and the boy's uncle was also notified; he arrived shortly after the crash.

Each year 300 children under the age of 14 are killed in bicycle related incidents, and 400,000 more are seriously injured. Head injuries are the most serious injury type and are the most common cause of death among bicyclist.

The most severe injuries are those to the brain that cause permanent brain damage. Studies show that bicycle helmet use can significantly reduce head injuries.

With the recent motorcycle accidents involving fatal injuries in Western Oregon, and this accident, it's a timely reminder to:

* Learn and practice street
crossing rules.
* Learn and practice bike safety rules. * Wear a helmet every time you ride. * See and be seen.
