(SALEM) - One person was transported to the hospital Thursday night after a shootout between a suspect and three police officers that reportedly took place inside of a Salem home.

Salem Police Lt. Steve Anglemier told KATU Newsthat officers responded just after 7:30 p.m., to a disturbance call involving a man and a woman and several other people in the 2400 block of 4th Street NE. A rifle was said to be present and involved, but apparently it was not being used to threaten anyone.

Portland TV station KATU wrote: A neighbor told police they saw about 10 people in the street when one person took off running behind a house. Police found the rifle and determined there was no crime involved. Police later learned that the person who ran behind the house had an outstanding warrant.

Later, police heard reports of the man running through a backyard. Police entered a house and that's when things could have turned deadly.

"The subject came out from a room saw one of the officers fired multiple rounds at him," Anglemeier said. "That officer returned fire. He then engaged two other officers. They both returned fire."

The suspect was hit multiple times and was taken to Salem Hospital. He is expected to survive. The police officers were not injured.

Police are investigating. The suspect's name, nor the names of the police officers involved, have not been released.

Our reporter Jerry Freeman talked to a woman who lives in the vicinity named Jeanette Jones March. She says she was outside talking to a friend when officers from the Salem Police Dept. asked her go take her kids and go back inside the house because a stabbing had just occurred.

"The guy is still loose and he is armed and dangerous".
