(SALEM) - The Marion County Sheriff’s Office will be holding a Citizens Police Academy this fall.

Training dates will be October 28th, November 4th, 11th, and 18th.

Each day will consist of approximately eight hours of training in various facets of law enforcement which include: an overview of the criminal justice system, community policing, patrol procedures, and community corrections, the use of the Police K-9 (including a demonstration), simulated firearms demonstration, a Meth awareness presentation, and a tour of the Marion County Correctional Facility, among other topics.

The Sheriff’s Office is offering the training free of charge. The Citizen Police Academy is open to adults eighteen years of age and older.

Everyone is invited to participate; however, preference will be given to residents of Marion County.

Applicants will undergo a criminal history background check.

While graduates of the academy will not be police officers, they will be better informed as to what deputies do and will be in a position to share their knowledge with their friends, neighbors and their communities.

Applications can be obtained at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office at 100 High St. NE, Salem.

The application form is also available online on the Sheriff’s Office website at: sheriff.co.marion.or.us/pdf/coaapp1.pdf.

Applications must be returned to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office no later than Friday, October 6th.
