Hurricane Humberto Hits Texas Coast, Louisiana

The storm is expected to leave thousands without power for at least a week.

(GALVESTON, TX) - Hurricane Humberto strengthened rapidly into a hurricane before making landfall this morning just east of Galveston, Texas.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Humberto is expected to weaken as it continues to move inland Thursday.

Local officials say Humberto caused power outages and damage to homes as it made landfall.

Forecasters have issued tropical storm warning from east of High Island, Texas to neighboring Louisiana.

Flood warnings were also issued for parts of Southeast Texas, including Beaumont, on into Louisiana.

Humberto is moving toward the north-northeast near 8 mph.

Maximum sustained winds were near 85 mph, with higher gusts confined to a small area northeast of the center.

Rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches were expected from southwestern to northeastern Louisiana.

"Once it came through, it came through hard and it flooded most everything over here," Galveston Sheriff Deputy Kyle Cavness told CNN.
