Sep-03-2011 18:22TweetFollow @OregonNews Planned October Surprise is No Surprise to Most!Bob Collinsworth – Salem-News.comElections, a bi-partisan team of parasites... not some big revelation.
(HARRISVILLE, N.H.) - Word has slipped out that the 50,000,000 (approx) Social Security recipients will be receiving a COLA increase in 2012. Rumor has it that the increase might be as large as 2.8% (up from the previously projected 1.1% increase) but the actual figure will not be determined until October of 2012. The actual figure will be determined based on inflation. While this is certainly good news for those on Social Security, we should take a closer look at the periphery of this issue. There are questions that should be asked regarding this potential COLA increase: Q. Why give the COLA increase now, in October of 2012? A. Congress is currently facing the lowest public approval rating of my lifetime (and I am 65 years old), at 12% and October 2012 is exactly 1 month before the scheduled November 2012 election. Remember, elections for some Congressional seats as well as the Presidential election will be held in November of 2012. Q. Considering how bad the economy has been for almost three years now, why wouldn’t Congress and the President have pushed for COLA increases in 2010 and 2011? A. Probably because they believed that most voters would forget in time for the 2012 elections . . . especially with the planned sizeable COLA to be given in October of 2012 . . . they chanced taking the “All will be forgiven” approach. Q. If the actual COLA increase will be calculated based on inflation, will that inflation figure be calculated from the point of the last COLA increase given in 2009 or will it be the inflation rate for 2012? A. It is too soon to say but I would not bet on the first of the above listed two possibilities.
Q. If the COLA increase will be based on inflation, will that be the real inflation including cost increases in food and fuel or will it be the make-believe inflation rate the government used . . . you know, the one where we are supposed to believe that the cost of food and fuel does not have an impact on our cost of living? A. What do you think? I think that since these same Senators and Congressional Representatives, who were making an average of $169,000.000 per year, voted themselves a $10,000.00 per year salary increase at the same time they denied a small COLA increase to Social Security recipients earning an average of $11,874.00 per year, I would not count on it being based on the real inflation rate.
Note: Now we must also consider the possibility that the bi-partisan team of parasites . . . er, ah . . . the committee of six Republicans and six Democrats, charged with finding an additional 1.2 trillion dollars in deficit cuts, may end-up finding those cuts in Social Security and/or Medicare spending.
So, how much of a surprise is this October surprise? None at all as far as I am concerned! 2012 is an election year after all and even the most disgusting leech must back-off of its blood sucking every now and then lest it kills the host . . . but, that is just my opinion!

Salem-News.com admittedly, is very critical of both American politics, as well as those of other nations that we perceive is being wrong in their motives and actions. At the same time, within these structures we criticize, are many outstanding people who make each day a better place for all those around them. They embody and personify the American spirit that is sometimes fleeting, but always present. These are some of the things Robert takes into account when writing commentary that is designed reach people, to "get them thinking" in his words, and indeed it does. "even the most disgusting leech must back-off of its blood sucking every now and then lest it kills the host". A very apt analogy. What more need be said?
