Salem Man Killed in Crash With Garbage TruckBonnie King Salem-News.com
Serious crash backed up traffic throughout the evening
(SALEM, Ore.) - UPDATE: All lanes of Mission Street in Salem, OR 22, are open again as of 8:41 PM
A two vehicle crash claimed the life of one man and sent another to the hospital Monday afternoon. Salem Police responded to the intersection of Mission St SE and 25th St SE at 1:56 p.m.
Arriving officers located two vehicles with heavy damage in the intersection. 26-year old Landon David Oliverson, from Salem, was the driver of one of the involved vehicles, a dark colored Jeep SUV. He was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle, a Republic Services waste disposal truck, was transported to the Salem ER with minor injuries. An investigation determined that the Jeep SUV was speeding and driving recklessly NB on 25th St SE prior to entering the intersection at Mission Street on a red light.
The Republic Services vehicle was traveling EB on Mission St SE and was unable to stop prior to the crash.
Mission Street OR 22, remains closed in both directions between Airport Road and 25th Street at the time of this report, due to the crash investigation. Police are working to clear the road of spilled diesel fuel and garbage from the garbage truck involved in the crash.
The closure continued through the Monday afternoon commute into this Evening. Traffic was directed onto local streets, backing up traffic for miles.
