(SALEM) - Twenty-eight representatives from area law enforcement agencies participated in the nationwide domestic violence sweeps this week. The team arrested 18 people over a 7-hour period on outstanding arrest warrants for domestic violence related crimes. Four of those people were also arrested on new charges including Possession of a Controlled Substance and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

Agencies participating included the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Parole and Probation and Patrol Divisions, Salem Police Department, Keizer Police Department and the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.

Some of the local domestic violence related statistics include:

  • In the last year, more than 1,600 reports of domestic violence were received by the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
  • Mid-Valley Women’s Crisis Service receives approximately 10,000 calls each year.
  • More than 250 survivors walk into Mid-Valley Women’s Crisis Service for help each year.
  • Between 250 and 500 women and children live in Mid-Valley Women’s Crisis Service’s shelter each year; and
  • Two out of every three residents of the shelter are children.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Kevin Rau says the goal of this event is to send messages to offenders that they will be held to account and to victims of domestic violence that there is hope and that others do care about their safety and that of their family.
