Oct-21-2006 18:57TweetFollow @OregonNews Dog With History of Attacks Kills Neighbor DogSalem-News.comKeizer Police say the 5-year old Pekingese involved in the attack has died. The exact cause, however, is unknown according to the family, and a Necropsy will be scheduled to determine cause.
(KEIZER) - A Keizer woman called Police Friday evening at 7:41 PM to Department report that her neighbor’s dog had just attacked her and her dog. A Keizer police officer responded within minutes and arrived at 5322 Jeffrey Court North within a few minutes. The victim, Karen Wright-Bayless, told officers that her dog, a 5-year old female Pekingese, was attacked by her neighbors Akita. The attack reportedly took place in the backyard of the complainant’s residence. During the attack Mrs. Wright-Bayless said she was also attacked by the Akita when she attempted to rescue her dog. She said she sustained bites to her forearms from the Akita at that time. Medics responded to the residence to treat her injuries which were not deemed to be serious. She was not transported for any further treatment. The investigating officer found the suspect dog belonged to a neighbor who resides at 5312 Jeffrey Court North. Although the owner was not at home when the incident occurred, the investigating officer was able to contact the owner at his residence later last evening. The dog's owwner, Jack R. Rabenberg, was issued a citation for having a “Dog as a Nuisance.” This offense is a violation and carries a base fine of $500. The suspect dog had returned to its residence after the incident. Police say this is the second time Mrs. Wright-Bayless and one of her dogs has been injured by the neighbor’s dog. The last incident occurred on May 15th, 2004. That incident resulted in Karen Rabenberg being issued a citation for the same offense (Dog as a Nuisance). She was found guilty of this violation on July 9th, 2004 and was ordered to pay $404 restitution, and a $537 fine of which $200 was suspended. The officer believes the dog that attacked Mrs. Wright-Bayless and her Pekingese yesterday was the same dog that attacked her and another one of her dogs in 2004. The Pekingese injured as a result of last night’s incident was treated and released at a local veterinary clinic. According to Mrs. Wright-Bayless the dog suffered multiple bruises across her body. Keizer Police say the 5-year old Pekingese involved in the attack had died. It is unknown the exact cause, however, according to the family, a Necropsy will be scheduled to determine cause. A report concerning last evening’s incident will be forwarded to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office, and to the Marion County Dog Control. This story really hit home for me since I have been having roaming dog problems in my neighborhood. This summer I had two big dogs threaten me in my backyard as I was gardening. Then, a couple of days ago it happened again, this time by a big (pitbullmix?) dog who ripped a hole through my wooden fence. It was a full grown unaltered male and I think there must have been a female around which made it act so crazed, but it was very scary. I talked to neighbors who said they were scared to leave their houses lately because of it. I don't blame them, it was very agressive! At least one of the neighbors called Dog Control. I have as well, but they told me I needed to "contain the animal" before they would drive out here! Exactly how do you go about containing a dangerous dog? Besides I felt real bad for the dog. It's not it's fault that the owners weren't responsible didn't care about neutering it and left it to roam the streets (no tags either, just a flimsy nylon harness). I saw it the next day, but it was limping. Poor thing! so, WHO and WHERE do you go for help when you Dog control won't come out? Just a question...

If Keizer Police tell us it is an Akita then we are supposed to second guess that? Should we interrogate the dog?
Get the story right October 23, 2006 5:14 pm (Pacific time)
Get the facts straight before you print this stuff. It wasn't an Akita that attacked that dog. It was a Siberian Husky.
Who's training who? October 22, 2006 11:29 am (Pacific time)
We need people trainers. Dogs are animals. Animals! Some are harder to domesticate than others. It is solely the responsiblity of the owner to protect people, property and even other animals from their dog. Owners really do need training too, especially if they have little or no experience before adding a dog to their life. Even small dogs cause a lot of harm unchecked. I'm not anti-dog, I'm anti-flake. Having a dog is a commitment, and you will take the fall if you don't take it seriously. Sorry to hear about the pekinese, there couldn't have been much of a contest between them. Sad.

Dogs Suck October 21, 2006 10:57 pm (Pacific time)
Another shining example of how useless and clueless some dog owners can be. I can't count the amount of times I have gone for attempted peaceful walks to have some deranged four legged glue stick run up on me growling with teeth out and the worthless owner isn't around or is and just stares and does nothing. I had to damn near shoot a pit bull a week or two ago as it charged up on me exiting my car IN MY OWN driveway and tried to bite me. Luckily that time the owner saw what was about to happen and got the dog. Don't some people realize dogs can mame and even kill someone?????? It might be cute to you as an owner, but it is your dog, not mine and it is not cute to me when this garbage happens. Now I report all roaming dogs and any dog that gets aggressive in any way.
